Full post vs Excerpt showing on main page

Hi there. So I have a wordpress site – not paying to host it elsewhere, just a native free wordpress site using the twothousandfourteeen theme. I have been super frustrated because all the help files say to edit index.php to fix the issue of showing the excerpt vs. full post (and the dang settings->reading where you can select that doesn’t seem to do anything).

I tried creating a ‘home’ page so i could use that and a different page for the blogs like folks reccomended, but couldn’t get the home page to show any blogs (summary or not)… So back to letting wordpress show the blog as the summary but just don’t want the full article posting.

So 1) I would like to know how one accesses the source files for their site if you are using a free wordpress one. Nowhere seems to tell me (and what to use to edit it). I don’t mind staring at code :)
    2) Any idea how to fix this issue given the information above?

    My site is: https://fishfoodandfun.wordpress.com/

Any help appreciated. I thought it was supposed to be pretty straightforward but apparently stumps even a computer science major!
    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Note that “the more tag” is not a theme-specific feature. There is also no global setting for it. It can only be embedded into individual posts and pages.

Also, note that the setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.

If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication in the exact spot you want the content to split off.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the content does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. Use this filter for active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/blog-excerpts

For other ways to splitting content in posts see > https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/

Go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading and scroll down to enable infinite scroll on the same page.

To infinity and beyond __ Scroll Infinitely
(Shows 7 posts on each load)

    Infinite Scroll

Thank you so much! The more feature is pretty cool! So how do you get to editing the code of the site iteslf? i.e. say i want to go into the HTML and change fonts, colors etc or anything? Does it have to be hosted on a paid site to get to this code (like that darn index.php I hear about). Really appreciate the help.

We wordpress.COM bloggers do not have access to the template files underlying our themes on wordpress.COM hosted blogs and cannot edit them. For that capability you need a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting.

WordPress.COM is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme use the same underlying template found on the live demo site for each theme. Only Staff can edit templates as every edit affects all sites wearing the same theme.

Does Customize let me edit HTML?
No. Customize allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. If you require this functionality, please consider moving your blog to a web host that supports theme code modifications. You can read more about why here http://support.wordpress.com/code/, and find a suitable host here http://get.wp.com/hosting/.
