Full-size images from posterous?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I have read every page on the internet about migrating a site from posterous to wordpress.com or wordpress.org, and I can’t seem to figure out a way to import my posterous blog and retain the links the the full-size images. The wordpress.com plugin works great, but it only seems to import the scaled images. The wordpress.org plugin does not seem to work at all – it looks like it uses an older version of the posterous API. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jacob

I’ll reference this just in case you haven’t seen it: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-posterous/ and look under “known issues”. It says,

Images referenced within posts refer to a scaled down version when images are greater than 1,000 pixels wide. The original images are included in the zip file but at present can’t be automatically pulled into the WordPress.com site via the importer.

That means that you will have to go to media > add new and import the full-sized images from the zip file. You can do this for multiple images at a time by drag and drop. I limit drag and drop to about 10 images at a time otherwise I’ve seen things time out and not bring in all the images.

Thanks for the prompt response. I did see the note under known issues, but I thought there might be a creative solution. I think the solution you suggested (import full-sized images) is good for a batch upload, but I can’t get it to do the thing the posterous does, which is display the resized image for the post and then allow viewing the full-sized image by clicking on the resized version. If I import them as you suggested, they all get imported to a new post. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to manually recreate the posterous functionality without going one-by-one through the posts?

    Thanks
    Jacob

I’ll tag this thread for staff attention and perhaps they have a creative solution for you. Hopefully they will be around soon to reply.

    Hi Jacob!

Richard had the correct suggestion that you upload the full-size images to your media library (separate from a new post). Here’s a handy reference that might be useful:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new/

There you can do a batch upload of all of your high-res images. Unfortunately, there’s no shortcut to link these images to existing posts. You would have to go through and add the images to each post again. However, when you add the image, you can choose to display a smaller image and have a click through to the full sized image. Here’s another reference that might help:

Sorry there isn’t more we can do, but hopefully this will help get you started.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
