Every theme has a detailed theme description page. This one is at https://wordpress.com/theme/penscratch-2 that’s where set up instructions for it and the live demo site link is found.

The short answer is that you have the ability to edit the CSS stylesheet only when you upgrade to WordPress.COM Premium or Business plans.

The only themes we can use on WordPress.COM hosted sites are here https://wordpress.com/themes/ The way your theme is designed to function and the features it has are found at the detailed description page, for example at https://wordpress.com/theme/resonar and that’s where the live demo site link is also found. We cannot change how any theme functions. We can do some CSS editing to change appearance only if we have the required upgrade.

WordPress.COM is a multi user blogging platform with off the shelf themes and it’s aimed for use by those who do not code. Each theme is uniquely designed. We wordpress.com bloggers do not have access to the template files underlying our themes and we cannot edit them, as our blogs share a common architecture, and as all blogs wearing the same theme use the same underlying template, found on the live demo site for each theme.

Does Customize let me edit HTML?
No. Customize allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. If you require this functionality, please consider moving your blog to a web host that supports theme code modifications. You can read more about why here http://support.wordpress.com/code/, and find a suitable host here http://get.wp.com/hosting/.

Note 1: Once you have the required upgrade you can use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can create a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need with CSS editing.

Note 2: You can also post there prior to purchasing an upgrade to get an answer to whether or not what you want to do can be accomplished via CSS editing.

  • You can add a full-width widget as long as the widget is alone in its footer widget area. Since you already have other widgets in the Footer 3 widget area, this won’t work. Try putting your full-width element in one of the empty footer widget areas, or shift things around.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you so much Kathrynwp. One more question I have been trying to put a read more tag on my website page both in Visual And HTML but its not showing on the website page,I have tried to follow all the instructions but to no avail.I tried pagination its working but i really needed the read more tag instead.the site is zimbabweanodyssey.wordpress.com

  • The Read More tag is only for posts, not pages.

It doesn’t look like you’ve assigned anywhere for your blog posts to be displayed yet. Until you do, you won’t see the effect of any Read More tag. The Read More tag displays excerpts on your blog page. If you want to set up a blog page, create a page called Blog (or News, or whatever you like). In your Customizer‘s Static Front Page panel, choose that page from the dropdown menu under “Posts page.”

Also keep in mind that you can set Penscratch 2 to automatically use excerpts on your blog page, which avoids the need to manually add a More tag to every post. I see you’ve already set that up in the Customizer’s Content Options panel, so you’re all set there – no need to use Read More.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi i have added a Milestone on footer 2 and 3 of my website using penscratch 2 theme.I would like to find out if its possible to add them both on footer 2 standing side by side. The website i need held is zimbabweanodyssey.wordpress.com.The milestone I am referring to are the ones about VICTORIA FALLS CARNIVAL and KARIBA INVATION TIGER FISHING TOURNAMENT.
    Thank you.

  • Right now your milestone widget “Jameson Victoria Falls Carnival” is in the Sidebar widget area. Try instead putting it into the Footer 2 widget area. That should place it beside the “Kariba Invitation Tiger Fishing Tournament” widget which is currently in Footer 3.
