  How do I start a basic website reserving a domain name now and upgrade to a higher level like e-commerce later?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Hi there,

  To do this, you would need to purchase the domain using a free or personal plan in order to ensure that it will not be taken by someone else.

  Then when you are ready, upgrade to the desired plan with your already owned domain name.

  Hi there,

  You can register a domain without upgrading to a plan, but then the domain won’t be free with your plan, and it will only redirect to your free WordPress.com address, instead of appearing as the primary domain on your site.
