Gain access to an old site

    Hi,

I have recently become aware of a WordPress blog that was created on behalf of the organisation I work for around 7 years ago. The team involved left around 5-6 years ago.

Unfortunately nobody currently working for the organisation is aware of the blog or has log in details for it, and we now need to fulfill a legal requirement with regards to it.

Would it be possible to speak/email someone about how we can possibly regain access (preferable) or take down the blog?

    Yours sincerely,
    Damien

    Hello @dephelis!

What is the URL for the blog? Volunteers and staff won’t be able to help without that. It helps us determine whether it’s actually a WordPress.com blog, or a self-hosted WordPress.org website. If you aren’t sure, check out this link for more info: WordPress.com and WordPress.org The easiest way to identify a free WordPress.com site is if the site URL is something like yoursite.wordpress.com.

If it is a WordPress.com account:
To recover the account you typically need to provide some information regarding the account, like the original username or email address, transaction IDs from paid purchases, or an old activation email. If none of these are available it may be more difficult.

Check out this support doc on Account Recovery. After you’ve pulled together all the info you can find, fill out the Account Recovery Form to communicate with staff.

Again, please share the URL below so we can better help.

    Best of luck!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the response.

It’s a WordPress.com blog. I’ve tried the standard account recovery process but. Unfortunately there is no information regarding the user account used, transaction id’s and the email address is unknown. I’ve attempted recovery based on our current standard email format, but I have no way of knowing if the same format was used then as there are none of the current staff were employed back then and the records I’ve inherited only go back 4-5 years.

My queries a resulting from a legal compliance issue under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. So I really need to discuss this with a member of WordPress staff and in a non-public format.

    Best regards,
    Damien

Although the site was set up on behalf of an organization, WordPress.com sites are owned by individuals and the owner needs to log in to be able to delete it. This new account you are using now will have no connection with the unnamed site. However I’ve tagged this thread to ask if a member of staff could advise you further.

I appreciate that. However, the reality is that the organisation carries the legal liability for the site and not the individual. Quite a bind.

    Thanks for tagging.
