Gaining control of a site after my developer became unreachable.
-
Hello. I am the owner of Critter Clear a product-based business. Several years ago, I hired a developer to build and maintain my site, critterclear.com. He has become unreachable, and as my business is growing, I need to regain control of the site and do some updates and edits. I know this is a c panel site, but I am unable to verify my username and access it to upgrade php and maintain administrative controls. I do have administrative control of the wordpress site itself.

Hi there!
Thanks for getting in touch. To avoid any confusion, it’s important to distinguish between three different versions of “WordPress”:
- The free, open-source WordPress software that powers your website.
- WordPress.org, the open-source project where you can obtain the software for free to use on your chosen hosting provider.
- WordPress.com, a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software, which is the platform you are currently contacting.
Since your site is not hosted with us, we’re limited in what we can help with and advise. But I can get you pointed in the right direction to get help.
Unfortunately, the only one with access to your hosting account would be the person you hired, unless you are paying for the hosting directly to the hosting provider. If you are, you could use the proof of payment as a way to prove ownership of the hosting account.
Otherwise, you have the option to migrate your site to our hosting platform, which would allow us to provide in-house assistance. To facilitate the migration process, we’ve developed a migration plugin that you can find here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpcom-migration/. Please note that your site would need to be on the Creator plan for this option.
In this instance, you would not need to update anything on the hosting cPanel since you have Administrator access to the WordPress install.
Let us know if you have any questions.
