Galleries with recent Changes

I had a problem not long ago, that was rectified by a helpful person; letting me know that all I had to do to sort out my problem with Galleries ‘acting up’ (to a ‘default’ of 1 column!) by simply changing the ‘shortcodes’ in the ‘text’ tab of the editor.
This is now no longer working for me.. it seems they have a ‘default’ that cannot be changed.
Except for the ‘circles’ option? Also ‘thumbnail’ where it at least gives you the option to Choose How Many Columns…. (but I don’t like the look of the ‘thumbnail’ layout.. Annoying that all of them don’t have this feature! :/ I tried a few of the different galleries, and no difference even when I typed 2 column in shortcodes, it didn’t make any difference I still had about 4 columns… The only way around it was to have a ‘gallery’ of only two images at a time ~ which is time consuming and fiddly.
Am I simply missing some information?
Thanks,

Could you point me to a specific page where the gallery isn’t working the way you would like? That will help me help you figure out what we can do to fix it.
-
Hi Liz,
As I mentioned, I had to make them a gallery of 2 to ‘dodge’ the problem. In this post though, I ‘gave up‘ and figured that it looked ok… as it was a ‘mix’ of picture quotes.
I have tried it various times and only the thumbnail and circle gallery lets you ‘fix’ the shortcodes.
-
Forgot to mention.. I do still have the shortcodes written as columns=”2″ there but as you can see it’s a ‘mix’…

FWIW-The Tiled Mosaic Gallery style doesn’t respond to a column number even if you add it to the shortcode, because this style fills the entire width of your theme’s content container with your images.
The only Gallery styles that respond to a column number are circles and squares (which prefer multiples of 3) and the default thumbnail gallery style. More here: https://agallerydemo.wordpress.com/2012/10/05/shapes-and-mosaics-new-ways-of-displaying-your-gallery-thumbnails/
I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I’ve just noticed that you are using a Premium theme, Lens. You may also wish to inquire with the theme author in the special forum for Lens. It’s linked from your Dashboard or in the Theme Showcase page. You do need to be logged in with the username that bought the theme.

Hi,
Still waiting on Liz / Happiness Engineers response, I don’t like using thumbnails, or squares… I always prefer to use 2 columns and never had a problem before in shortcodes.
I’m aware of the forum for Lens. I don’t need to contact him about this but he is helpful.
-
No worries.
But I do have to correct myself for anyone who may look in on this thread in the future, as I must have been really tired when I wrote my above answer.
The only Gallery style where you can actually define the number of columns is the default Thumbnail Grid style. The other mosaic styles (circle, square and rectangle) fill the width of your theme’s content container. All mosaic Gallery styles prefer multiples of 3 images displayed.
If you look in the Media Manager (not Library) when setting up or editing a Gallery, there will not be any ability to define the number of columns for those mosaic Gallery styles. Only when you set the Gallery style as Thumbnail Grid will the ability to set the number of columns appear.
So my thought is that although you can switch to the Text Editor after inserting a Gallery and add columns=”2″ to the Gallery shortcode, if it isn’t the Thumbnail Grid the program ignores it.
If you can post a link to a previous post where you inserted a 2 column mosaic Gallery and it worked, please do. It will help @lizthefair, too.

That is what I’ve been discussing with Liz, the fact that the shortcodes are not working like they used to.
I am quite aware of the default and ability to choose the rows. etc, etc, etc,…….. It’s why I switched to shortcodes a long while back but they are not working now.
I fixed them a long while back… they were circles and others defaulting to only one row That’s when I started using shortcodes for all of my galleries.
I appreciate your concern, but would rather wait for staff / Liz to help me out… Jenn
I don’t mind a long wait, that usually means they are giving it the attention it needs. This problem was not so bad over 6 months ago or so. I just hope that in the future it can even be resolved in the ‘choice of a gallery’ not with ‘shortcodes’. Albeit, the shortcodes not working is driving me up the proverbial wall.

As I said above, no worries, and
But I do have to correct myself for anyone who may look in on this thread in the future…
Cheers.
-
Um… yes well to correct yourself, ok but….
I just found I was answering your questions both times, and you had seemingly not followed my questions in the first place, so were confusing the matter: yes
Cheers.
-
I apologize if you felt I was confusing the issue. Initially I was trying to answer your question and as I say in my Gallery FAQ, the Gallery feature is a continual work-in-progress and may go pear-shaped at any moment. It certainly has changed a lot since it was introduced in 2008.
Again, best wishes.

……………, oh my, I did ask for you to leave it to Liz after your 1st comment…………………..
I was clear in my opening comment that Shortcodes were not Working.
-
I have tried it various times and only the thumbnail and circle gallery lets you ‘fix’ the shortcodes.
Using medium sized images, I was able to get images to display in two columns in all of the formats other than tiled mosaic–which doesn’t use columns.
If you could provide a link to a page where you are using one of the supported gallery formats that isn’t taking a 2 column rule into account, I’m happy to take a look at your specific code. The code has to be formatted perfectly or it won’t work.

@afreestyler – Just for the future, it would help forum volunteers if you would please tag your own forum threads with the “modlook” tag if you only want Staff to reply to your queries. That will alert us that we can move on to other community members who need assistance.
-
I did mark it for ‘modlook’ and it’s when liz came by and commented.. strangely the tag is gone now ~ but i did to 2 of my queries, maybe it’s deleted once they look.
Anyhow, by stating I was waiting for liz should have been enough.. Also; by seeing that staff were already answering should Also have been enough…. Now is that all… you can hopefully ‘unsubscribe from this topic Please.
-
Thanks Liz.. I will check a few, I couldn’t get the one to display as 2, with one that uses the ‘newish’ columns gallery..?
I will get back to you once I try some more.
-
Hi Liz,
After your comment, I now think it’s the size of the images in this gallery I mentioned earlier I’m trying to fix, but now I believe some of those images maybe too small for what ‘i’m asking’ it to do.. After you said you tried a gallery with medium sized images I thought.. ‘of course..’ one of them is small, so it may be throwing it all ‘out’.. I’ll let you know also if I find a problem sifting through other posts and if all else fails.. can always do a bunch of galleries with only 2 images at a time :)
-
@afreestyler – I must have overlooked that. I will look more closely next time and certainly leave Staff to answer your forum questions.
Any person can subscribe to any forum thread and I am following this one with interest because it involves the Gallery feature.
@lizthefair- Thank you for your assistance in this thread.

Simply put jennifer, you didn’t seem to mind the fact that you were confusing the issue, asking far too many irrelevant questions… and you seemingly don’t want to stop… therefore if you have your own questions; please start your own thread.
As your irrelevant questioning has driven me quite up the wall. Since this is my thread, fine; follow it, I can only ask you to simply stop posting to it and harassing me, is what it feels like as any ‘information’ you posted I already knew and Liz had answered my questions at any rate.
