Gallery block flashes when moving from one image to next

When viewing a gallery block, clicking on the next or previous icon (to move to the next/previous image) an image flashes up of all the gallery images before the actual next/previous image is displayed. I’m sure this is a new behaviour. I’ve tried viewing my site on an iPad as well as a PC laptop and using to browsers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there, thanks for reporting this! I was able to reproduce the issue and have reported it to our development team.

In the meantime, you can work around it by going to Settings → Media and unchecking “Display images in full-size carousel slideshow.” Then make sure “Enlarge on click” is enabled on your gallery block so images still open in a lightbox. More on that setting here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/gallery-settings/#navigate-images-in-the-lightbox

OK. I’ve unchecked “Display images in full-size carousel slideshow”. I’ve tried to set “enlarge on click” on the gallery block in a post but there isn’t a link button (is it because it’s a Tiled Gallery?). Also, presumably this only affects a single post. I have tiled galleries throughout my blog! I guess I may have to wait for a fix to the problem.

  • Thank you for the additional context, and just to confirm: the “Enlarge on click” option for the lightbox feature is specific to Image blocks and Gallery blocks (which contain Image blocks). It will not appear as an option for Tiled gallery blocks, since the lightbox feature when clicking an image is this block’s default behavior.

You may choose to recreate this area of your page using a Gallery block, but if you’re seeing this behavior on multiple pages, you can also give it time for our developers to address the issue with flashing images for Tiled Galleries.

I hope this information will help, and thanks again for sharing this report and for your patience.

OK, thank you. I’ll wait for the developer’s solution.

I had a look at the gallery block and really like the way it behaves where clicking on an image enlarges an image and clicking it again removes the enlarged image but at the same time allowing the next/previous image feature. What I don’t like is that in order for the gallery to initially display uniform sized images (when the images are different shapes), it’s necessary to turn on the ‘crop images to fit’ setting. But that also crops the image when it’s clicked on and when displayed using the next/previous controls. It doesn’t make sense to me to crop the images when they’re actually displayed. Oh well!

  • Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback on the gallery block. I’ve passed it on to our development team.

We’ll let you know once the original issue is resolved. We appreciate your patience.
