Gallery creating too many copies. How do I stop it?
-
I recently converted from an old CMS system to WordPress with a lot of success. I’m running a video game/film review site at http://www.media-geeks.com. As you can imagine, I include a lot of imagery with my articles, screenshots and the like. I got a notice from my hosting service today that I’m violating their directory structure because my folders contain more than 1,024 files. I didn’t understand at first, I mean, I know I use a lot of imagery, but not THAT much, being that the images are separated by year, then by month into appropriate folders.
Turns out that each and every single image I upload has 6 copies of itself created and uploaded at various dimensions. This is way too much. I do require thumbnails to be created for any image gallery I’m embedding, and any feature image needs at least 2 additional copies for various sections, but 6 for everything, including dimensions I don’t even use?
Is there any way I can get a handle on this to reduce my overhead and get my file totals cut down?

I deeply sympathize with you. I have had the same image replication experience too.
I cannot even use the language I would like to use to express how I feel about what’s happening with image handling right now. {SILENT SCREAM!}
And as there is no ability to bulk edit — well, you get the picture — deleting 1003 images one at a time is what’s before me.
But you are posting to the wrong support forum. This forum is only for those who have issues with free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM and yours is a wordpress.ORG install. So the bottom line is you have to post to http://wordpress.ORG/support/

yeah, thanks timethief, I discovered it was the wrong forum no sooner than I hit submit… ah well. I found some places over there to help, but there’s no solid solution… and my file list is in the 5,000 realm.
It’s going to be a fun weekend.

I am so peeved off that I will NOT be devoting my weekend to this nuking of replicators – maybe. :( I need to simmer down first.

Hm, I don’t wonder if this doesn’t explain the problems in the Gallery posts in the theme demo blogs, such as this one… http://cleanhomedemo.wordpress.com/2008/04/01/simple-gallery-test/
