gallery edit tab no longer shows images, just file names of the images
-
Hoping someone can explain / advise how to fix the gallery edit tab no longer showing images since upgrade to 4.8?
I’m referring to a media / content gallery that’s already inserted in a post – clicking on the ‘pencil edit’ icon when the gallery is selected opens the editing dialogue box, with 2 tabs. The first tab ‘preview’ – no issue with this, all of the gallery’s images are displayed as they are in the post.
The second tab ‘edit’ now does not show the images (for re-ordering for example) but only the file names of those images. Makes reordering a bit tricky, guessing which is which image when changing the order!
This is a completely new phenomenon since the upgrade and very irritating. I have screenshots of what I mean of the difference between the 2 tabs, however couldn’t find anyway to attach them to this.

Hi there,
Can you please contact us via Live chat? Then we can help you with this there:

Hi there WP – yes I used your live chat today for another issue, and it was very good, helpful….I don’t have more time at the moment to participate in that though and was hoping to just get a general idea on why this irritating bug may be occurring. If this isn’t forthcoming in a couple of days, I’ll certainly use live chat again :-) I will also have another issue – my ‘switch to the new improved editor’ option / link / function [which I used exclusively, as it is a 100% better than traditional editor] disappeared a couple of hours ago and which I’m REALLY unhappy with – no option on ‘new post’ creation and editing published posts [from my site as the starting point] now defaults to old editor, instead of defaulting to new improved editor as it did a couple of hours ago…

Because you have plugins installed on your site it works a bit differently from regular WordPress.com sites, that’s why it’s better for us to help you via chat, as volunteers here in the forum don’t have access to all the tools needed to help you with your site. But let me see what I can do :)
The second tab ‘edit’ now does not show the images (for re-ordering for example) but only the file names of those images.
I checked some of your posts in the editor, and I can see the images just fine in the gallery Edit tab:

If the images don’t appear for you, it’s likely just that your browser is having trouble loading them. Please try clearing your browser cache and cookies, and reset your internet connection, and the images should load again.
I notice you also added a different image gallery plugin. Note that that might interfere with the built-in image galleries on your site.
I will also have another issue – my ‘switch to the new improved editor’ option / link / function [which I used exclusively, as it is a 100% better than traditional editor] disappeared a couple of hours ago
That is due to the plugins you installed. To use the new editor, click on My Site which appears in the top left of the screen here in the forums, in WP-Admin, or in the Reader. If you go to Posts ->Add in the menu that appears there, you’ll be in the new editor, or just click on Blog Posts to edit your existing posts.
no option on ‘new post’ creation and editing published posts [from my site as the starting point] now defaults to old editor,
What exactly are you doing that takes you to the WP-Admin editor? What steps do you usually follow to start a new post and where do you click? All default options should be taking you to the My Site editor, so this might be a bug.

Hi kokkieh, thanks for the response – the issue with the pictures not loading is nothing to do with the plugins, all of which were only installed yesterday, the issue occurred directly after the 4.8 upgrade a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t even ‘opened’ the gallery plugin yet, as I hope to resolve this first, in case I still decide to use the stock gallery [one of the reasons I installed the gallery plugin was because of this error!] on occasion.
Clearing the cache and cookies was one of the first things that I did, some days ago, and this did not resolve the issue. The link that you have included is exactly what it used to look like and now does not! and that is what I want it to return to looking like!!
Although that format / dialogue box is, of course, part of the ‘new editor’, which as of late yesterday, is not an option that I can now access conveniently…I’ve found the new editor again, from the ‘My Site’ menu as you’ve indicated above, however this is not how I usually start or edit posts, which I do in WP-Admin editor [the layout and ordering of posts is much more user friendly to find / view a large number, as 20 posts are on a page, about 10 to a screen, instead of the one and a half posts that fit on the screen in the My Site menu!] and then clicked on the link ‘switch to the improved editor’ or whatever it said, that appeared at the top of the post [draft or published, it appeared on all of them], and then clicked the link and continued creating or editing from there. The link no longer appears, there is no option to then switch to the new editor.
That I can work around I suppose, but the aspect that is really annoying me, because I do this a lot – see something on my site, ie the actual published post on my actual site, that I want to tweak in an edit – is that the default editor for the ‘edit’ links that appear on the actual published pages / posts on my actual published site is now the WP-Admin one. Up until yesterday, editing a page / post with the starting point being directly from my published site, the default editor was the new editor. And I can’t work around this, because I now don’t have any ‘switch to the improved editor’ link appearing on any WP-Admin edit page…

We don’t work with WordPress version numbers on WordPress.com. We did merge the 4.8 updates into WordPress.com, but there was nothing there that would affect gallery behaviour in the My Sites editor.
The link that you have included is exactly what it used to look like and now does not! and that is what I want it to return to looking like!!
I took that screen shot by logging into your site, so it’s your editor that’s showing that for me. So the problem is not with your site/the software. It’s restricted to your browser.
If clearing cache and cookies don’t work, please try an incognito window in Chrome. It might be a browser extension that’s blocking some code.

It sounds like you used a bit of a roundabout way to reach the editor. It has never been necessary to go to WP-Admin first to reach the new editor. But I understand that this has been a disruption to your normal flow.

Okay, that is due to the plugins you installed, which makes your site work a bit differently from regular WordPress.com sites. These kinds of sites are still very new on WordPress.com, so we’re still discovering issues like this each day that needs to be fixed. This particular problem is already being worked on, but I can’t tell you at this time when it will be fixed, so for now the only way for you to reach the My Site editor is via first clicking on My Sites.
The other option is that we revert your site back to how it was before you installed plugins, but you will lose any new content you’d added since you installed that plugin. Please confirm if I should do that.
Once the site is back to being a regular WordPress.com site we can then see if we can figure out what’s causing the gallery not to work for you.

Hi kokkieh again, and thankyou again for your response. Firstly, no I definitely do not want my site back to what it was before plugins! It is now 100% better both visually and in terms of what I am able to do with it, it’s functionality. As of today, my gallery is now working as it used to so that is somehow solved – maybe it was the plugins!! Obviously that’s a joke, I do not think that, but as the issue preceded the installation of plugins by several weeks, clearly the plugins did not cause or contribute in any way to it, it was nothing to do with the plugins.
-
The editor issue remains extremely annoying though! The reason I access [used to access] the My Site editor via the link that was provided in WP-Admin editor is although this is not necessary, there is no functionality whatsoever in My Site for managing posts – there’s no filter for sorting / ordering, ie by date or category, and the only ordering available is crazy – either scroll through every post [hugely displayed over 3/4 of a screen page per post] in reverse chronological order or search one at a time in the search box. Draft posts are displayed in order of the last time it was modified and not, as in WP-Admin, by scheduled date of publish. There is no way to change any of this ordering and so it does not offer organised functionality at all. I loathe it to be honest!! The only thing My Site does is house the new and vastly superior editor – is there no way to combine the best of each??!!!

Yay! Thanks for letting me know.
The editor issue remains extremely annoying though!
I understand that, but this is due to the type of site you have now. The issue has been reported, but I can’t tell you if or when this will change at this time.

We are working on adding this functionality to My Sites, but it’s a big task that takes time. But our developers are actively working on this.

Well that’s a glimmer of hope! Thanks so much again for your time kokkieh – I realise that I’m supposed to use the biz plan 24hr instant chat but I have a pretty full-on full time job that has nothing to do with my website [and 2 pretty full-on Cavalier Spaniels, as seen in my profile pic!] and I don’t always have a lot of time to ‘instant chat’, so I like to be able to come back to something when I can fit it in :-)

I completely understand. Keep in mind that you can always start a chat and ask the operator to follow up with you via email as well, but whatever works easiest for you.
