Gallery : image sizes

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello !
i hope my english will be understandable…

1)I’m wondering if it’s possible, when i add pictures on a post through the “gallery” way, to have the images appearing in a large or full size? they are always appearing in a “miniature” (smaller) size and i feel it unconvenient, as we always have to click on each photo to be able to see it better with the details…

2)and then i have to click on my navigator bar to “previous” so that i can go back to the gallery… Isn’t it a way to click on “next photo” when we are already watching one in details?

3)For my gallery pb, i finally posted each photo one by one (very long!!) so that they can appear in a big size.. specially because i also put some music on this same post and every time we were clicking on one photo of the gallery, that presented the photo alone and the music stopped !

I hope my explanations would be understood.

Thanks a lot for your help

    1) Yes it’s possible. The default setting (if you just write [gallery]) is three thumbails per row, but you can change that by adding extra commands, e.g. [gallery columns="1" size="full"].
    2) That unfortunately is theme-dependent. With some themes you get next and previous thumbnails below each single large image in the so-called attachment page.

For the best information on the gallery feature see here:
    http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/not-the-official-wordpresscom-gallery-faq/

    3) For separate, no-gallery, images, there’s a faster way than uploading them and inserting them one by one. You can select them all and upload them all at once if they are in a sequence in one folder in your computer (provided your Flash uploader works), and then insert them by opening a second window in your browser, going to the media library and dragging the thumbnails from the library to the post editor.

    Thanks a lot. i’ll try !!
but for the 3rd) question, if i understand you well, after i drag all the pic together in the media library, i’ll still have to click “insert in the post” for each one one by one?

    thanks a lot

No: what I said was drag the thumbnails FROM the media library TO the post editor. That’s a way to insert them in the post without having to click “Insert” for each one. Try it and you’ll see.

Thanks a lot ! i notice you’ve already helped me with the music stuff.
    you’re great ;)

    me again…
the gallery thing does work it’s great !
but the “dragging-photos” thing doesn’t… i think because i didnt understand what you said very well…
    If you have time…

I put the pictures in the media library like normal? by “taking a file in my computer” and then i see them in the media library. but for dragging them… i drag everything that comes with (the entire window of the media library).

    thanks!

I’m not sure what you mean; perhaps you tried selecting several images together in the media library to drag them all at once? that can’t be done!

So let me try to describe more precicely what I suggested: while in the VISUAL post editor, you upload your images, WITHOUT INSERTING THEM in the post. Then you open a new window in your browser, go to Manage > Media Library, drag & drop thumbnails from media library to visual editor ONE BY ONE.

You can then click on the inserted images and click the mountain icon that shows up, to change their alignment, if you want, or proceed to clicking “Advanced Settings” if you have to add space around them (that’s theme-dependent: some themes provide proper spacing automatically, others unfortunately stick the images to one another).

Now that’s for creating a non-gallery set of thumbnails that will lead to the full-size originals when clicked. If you want larger images in the post itself, then it’s no longer a faster way: you have to click image > mountain icon > Advanced Settings, delete the “?w=xx” part of the “Source” URL, delete the “Height” indication (so that you don’t have to calculate that dimension), change the “Width” indication to the desired one (up to the width of the original or the maximum width allowed in your theme – whichever is smaller), and click Update.

So if you want large images in the post I’m afraid you have to resort to uploading and inserting them one by one the “normal” way. But at least (in case you’re not aware of that) in Settings > Media you can specify your preferred default options for size and alignment, so that you won’t have to set them for each image you upload.

(Note that to me a faster way to change the size would be switching to html and modifying the codes – but I don’t know if you are familiar with image coding.)

    uh… not really ! :D

But thanks a lot, i’ve already tried what you told me and it worked for the image advanced settings etc.
i’ve also been to Manage > Media library, (and not to “create a post” >add a pic >media library like I did and that’s the reason why it didn’t work !!)… then i have to clik on each pic to see it on a page alone and then i can drag it and drop it in the post like you told me !
But finallly i thought that if i can make the pic of a gallery bigger (like i did thanks to you again ^o^) , it’s good enough for me!

Simple question…: i tried to optimize the pics that i upload so that it will be quicker and smaller in my space etc. I did it in Picasa, put to 320pixels (?) or something like that (the smallest), then i got very small pic (to preserve the quality i guess).
What size would you recommend for a good quality/not too small pic ?

Anyway, i bothered you a lot already ! many thanks!!

Actually I didn’t tell you to click on each pic in the media library, then drag it: I said drag the thumbnails you see (without opening them). But then again, clicking on these thumbnails, getting to the original and dragging THAT to the post is another way of getting the full size original in the post, without having to edit it afterwards, so thanks for the idea!

Otimizing the size in an image editing application before uploading the images is a very good idea, not only because you save uploading time and space, but also because you get better quality: we have found that scaling-down by the wp uploader causes loss of sharpness and color vividness. See this thread for an example:

For the maximum width allowed in each theme see this FAQ:

How big can my images be?

    Thanks again ^^
actually, i understood what you said about dragging the thumbnails but i couldn’t (maybe also because i’m very bad at it !!). when i did it, i had a window poping up saying : “are you sure you wanna quit this page cause u will lost everything blabla..”
    nevermind !
i’ll loook at the links you put thanks!
