Hello!
First you will have to create the page where you want the link on the image to point to. Once the page is created you will go back to your portfolio page and click on the image. Now it depends on whether you are using the WordPress dashboard or the WP-Admin Dashboard.
WordPress Dashboard:
- Click on the image you want to set the link on
- Click on the insert/edit link button on the toolbar
- Select the page you want to link and click the Add Link button
WP-Admin Dashboard:
- Click on the image you want to set the link on
- Click on the insert/edit link button on the toolbar
- Paste in or type in the URL OR click on the Cog Symbol titled Link Options
- Select the page you want to link and click the Add Link button
Both options also allow you to have the link open in a new tab if you wish to do so.
I hope this helps!

@charleyfears – Hi there, looking at your site’s current portfolio page, it looks like you’ve used the WordPress Gallery feature as described here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/
Images inserted by using a Gallery can only link to None (standalone image), the media file itself, a larger image in the Photo Carousel (default) or an image attachment page. The Gallery thumbnail cannot link to anything else like a page or post.
Instead of using the Gallery feature on your site, you can use the Portfolio feature, which will link to a Portfolio project page. Here’s more on how to do that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/
