An image gallery will display a set of thumbnail images attached to a particular post or page. When clicked, gallery images are displayed in a full-size carousel view. When the “permalink” is clicked in the Carousel the individual images can be viewed on their own pages. Note that the Carousel cannot be disabled.

It used to be that when I included a gallery in my post, I (and my visitors) could click on each individual gallery image and see it “larger” just as I can now on individual images when they aren’t in a gallery. At that time, those images were not in a slide show. The way I saw the images was by clicking one one, seeing it larger, and then hitting the “back” arrow to go back and click on another image.
I haven’t added a gallery for quite some time until today. Now I see that the gallery I just added today is a slideshow. I couldn’t figure out how to have it not be a slideshow so I went back to the gallery I uploaded months ago and see that it is now a slide show. I can no longer click on one image at a time to make it quite large. I tried the “permalink” button, but that still limits how large my gallery image can go.
Am I missing something here or is the slideshow viewing for galleries the only option? What I posted today is at http://wp.me/pxxiA-2W1 (the recent post at http://www.mariongundersonart.com that is about the 1951 yearbook.
Thank you in advance for any advice you are able to offer.
Sincerely,

I know what you mean but That is how the gallery shortcode works now, which ever theme you use. https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/new-photo-carousel/
We cannot edit the carousel appearance or disable it. Staff have advised that this is the first iteration of the Carousel feature, so we’ll all have to wait and see what’s coming at us next. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/new-photo-carousel/#comment-142425

If you upload images using the Add Media button above the post/page editor, they will be attached automatically. If you want to include images that you’ve already uploaded, you’ll need to attach them to a post or page before they will appear in a gallery. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
