Gallery not loading in editor

I have several pages that use a gallery. About a week ago, the pages stopped loading in the editor. I usually get a series of numbers, which I think are image IDs. I tried clearing the cache, on the advice of the automated assistant but that didn’t do anything. What can I do?

The appearance of raw image IDs instead of your photos indicates that the WordPress block editor has lost its connection to the media metadata, often caused by a “handshake” error between your database and the Jetpack Image CDN. Since clearing your cache failed, your first step should be to click on the problematic block and select “Attempt Block Recovery” or “Resolve,” which forces the editor to re-fetch the images associated with those specific ID numbers. If the issue persists across multiple pages of bobfraserblog.wordpress.com, go to Settings > Performance and temporarily toggle “Speed up image load times” to OFF; this “resets” the image accelerator and often clears the glitch causing the editor to display IDs rather than thumbnails. Finally, ensure your galleries aren’t excessively large, as blocks containing over 50 images can sometimes time out and collapse into text strings to save memory—breaking these into smaller, separate gallery blocks typically restores the visual preview immediately.

I wasn’t able to use either suggestion. The page doesn’t have any options that I can see, so I don’t know how to find either “Attempt Block Recovery” or “Resolve”. Also, when I look at the options under “Settings”, I don’t see “Performance”.

Hi there @fraser9492 which pages specifically are involved?

  • Unknown's avatar

The pages Landscapes, Wonder, and Retrospective all have this problem.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, but I don’t see these pages on bobfraserblog.wordpress.com Are you referring to a different site? Kindly provide direct links instead. Thanks.

Sorry, it is a different site. The Landscapes page is here: https://harryfraserblog.wordpress.com/gallery-3/

And the Wonder page is here:

    Great, thanks.

So the issue is that these Gallery pages don’t load in the Page Editor itself? Would you be able to share a screenshot of what you do see there? https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/

It would also help us to know whether you are using the full Classic Editor or the Classic Block in the Block Editor on these pages.

Or even the dedicated Gallery Block, or a Pattern, etc., if not the above.

    I’m attaching a screen shot.

Here’s another from a different page:

OK-that looks like the Block Editor interface and possibly that you’ve added the Classic Block and created a Gallery within the Classic Block. Is that the case?

If so, you can click on the List View icon (the sliding hamburger icon) next to the Undo/Redo icons and then click Classic there? When you do that, you should see the option to either convert it to Blocks or Edit the Classic Block.

If you click “Edit” that will open the Classic Block pop-up window where you can edit the Gallery.

If you want to Convert the Classic Block to Blocks, it should automatically make that a Gallery Block

Thank you for your patience. I created this gallery six years ago and have been adding to it, so I’ve forgotten exactly how I created it. I followed your instructions and with the Classic Editor, I can see my images. When I first had this problem a week ago, I tried the Classic Editor and it removed all but 12 of my images, so I think it may have a limitation. I tried converting to blocks, as you suggested but it just seemed to put a box around the code I saw before. Here is what I get:

Thank you for sharing that screenshot. My best guess is that this is a result of the recent Gutenberg update across WPcom. On my test site using the same theme, Illustratr, when clicking “Convert to blocks” results in a Gallery block being created..

I’ve gone ahead and flagged your thread for staff attention. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Let me ask. Did you get the same result, a shortcode block rather than the actual Gallery block, when converting to blocks on the Wonder page?

The apparent issue with the Landscapes page is that there are no image IDs present in the code, so nothing to convert.

  • Unknown's avatar

That worked for the Wonder page. It doesn’t look the same as it did, but I can edit it again. The Landscapes page used to show the image IDs but that went away at some point with the experimenting. I’m guessing from this then that I will need to recreate the Landscapes page.

You can try to recover the previous version of your Landscapes page from Revisions

Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to restore a version from 3 months ago and convert it to blocks. Thanks for your prompt and persistent help in this. I appreciate it.

You’re very welcome. I’m just astonished that you needed to deal with the very legacy Gallery shortcode! Hopefully going forward you’ll find working with the Gallery block more straightforward.
