gallery not working as expected

  new post with format as gallery does not work as expected for the twenty fourteen theme. Upon preview the images just appear one below the other, instead of as a collage. Even when one image is clicked it just shows that image without an option/arrow to view next image

  Are you using these instructions? http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode

  To insert a tiled gallery, add the relevant shortcode addition after “gallery”:

  type=”rectangular”
  type=”square”
  type=”circle”

  To insert a slideshow gallery type, use this shortcode:

  [gallery type=”slideshow”]
