gallery photo views counted as page views in stats, is this a bug?

  • Unknown's avatar

Since using galleries for the first time in a post, a quarter or more of all my “page views” in stats are just clicks on photos within that one post.

Yet clicks on individual photos on my blog posts, (not in a gallery) have never been counted as page views only as “clicks”.

Oddly, some of these photo ‘page’ views are counted under a drop-down from homepage views, and others are counted as separate ‘page’ views. None of the galleries in that post even shows on my homepage, since I inserted a ‘more’ tag above them, so this is also something I don’t understand.

But the main problem is that this is really skewing my stats! makes pageview stats kind of meaningless…

Is this a bug? If not, why on earth are gallery clicks counted this way???

Thanks for any help with this…

    Hi there,

When someone views an image in your gallery, it’s counted as a page view. If you link your images to their attachment pages, visits to those pages will also count as page views. However, if you link images to the image file, those are not counted as page views (since the visitor is looking at specific image file).

In your stats, the page views for gallery images should show up under their parent post, if that post is also in the list. (For the image page views that are showing up separately, it’s likely that their parent post isn’t in the list. If that isn’t the case, please let me know and give me an example, so we can look into it.) I see that some of your images aren’t attached to a parent page, which is why they show up under your home page in the stats.

I hope this helps explain how these page views work!

Thank you for explaining this… I wish I understood better! Does this mean that if I can figure out how to link an image in a gallery to the image file instead of to an “attachment page,” that clicks on that image will not count as page views?

Can this be done in the text editor, or do I do it in the media library?

I didn’t even realize that an image could be in a gallery in a post without being “attached”, or that images had a ‘parent page’! It’s not obvious, since any click on an image just brings up a carousel, not an attachment page or an image file.

Ok, I will see what I can do about figuring this out, thanks for your help and thanks in advance for any further info…

I attached all the images to their posts, and edited galleries to link photos to their media file, instead of to an attachment page. (also turned off the carousel in settings/media).

Now when someone clicks on a gallery image, the media file comes up just as it does when someone clicks on an image that isn’t in a gallery.

I’m hoping that now the click on the gallery image will not count as a page view, any more than the click on the non-gallery image… Either way, thanks again for your help, I now know a lot more about uploading media files!

    Hi there,

Sorry if my previous explanation was a bit unclear. I should have clarified that when you use the gallery carousel and someone views an image in your gallery, it counts as a page view. As you mentioned, you can turn off the carousel under Settings > Media in your dashboard:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel

Since your gallery images are now linked to the media file and not the gallery carousel or an attachment page, clicks on those gallery images should not be counted as a view in your stats.

It looks like you’ve figured it all out at this point, but do let me know if I can help with anything else!

Whew! Thanks, I’m very relieved that my stats will be back to normal.
I like your ‘happy linguist’ moniker! I’m an (ex) linguist myself, got a BA in linguistics just because it was so fascinating, but never used it professionally… Thanks again for the support.
