Gallery photos are appearing in wrong order
-
When you click on a photo thumbnail in my gallery to get to the full-size photo, and then click on “Next” to go to the next photo, you end up at a random photo instead of the next one in the gallery.
What is going on here and how do I make the “Next” link to the actual next photo?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello!
When I click on your gallery pictures under the postings:
http://somethingtoread.wordpress.com/2014/05/26/lygia-clarks-sensorial-propositions/
and
http://somethingtoread.wordpress.com/2014/08/15/gallery-test-aug-2014/
the images appear in order. Where you able to solve the problem? If not it could be related to a browser issue. I was able to view it using Firefox 33. -
It’s not that blog, it’s another one: http://richardjkarty.wordpress.com
(but my post can’t be corrected. I would like to know who the Einstein is that decided to make it impossible to edit posts in this forum, and what their reasons are. I can name 50, maybe 100 other forums I’ve used where you can edit posts.)
-
Hm.
When the gallery was created can you confirm if the Random Image box was selected? If it was that is probably where the problem lies.
Go to Dashboard–>Post With the Gallery–>Click on Visual Editor–>Select Pencil Icon above the gallery. -
-
-
No it did not. The Random Image box *** had never been selected***
The problem is still there. Are you not seeing the problem when you visit the blog?
-
My mistake! Need more coffee this morning. =)
I think I may have figured it out. When you created this post here and inserted the pictures:
http://richardjkarty.wordpress.com/2014/11/18/bonn/
did you insert the pictures using the gallery feature in Media?
Can you confirm that the pictures were inserted using the gallery feature?
See also: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/Ideally, it should like something like this on my test-blog:
http://museumjunkies.wordpress.com/2014/10/05/new-post-2/ -
Yes I did use the gallery feature. What other way is there to insert photos as thumbnails in posts?
The issue here is a bug in WordPress but the company is ignoring it. So it looks like I’ll have to shut down my blog altogether because having wrong photos show up is unacceptable.
The photo sequence is correct when the carousel mode is used and wrong when it’s not used. But I am not going to use the carousel because I hate it, and this is non-negotiable.
-
Wrong photos being displayed is a problem!
As a forum volunteer I do not have access to the kinds of tools staff does. I’ve tagged this for a staff follow-up. -
Oops – in my last post I misspoke:
It’s not only that the *sequence* is wrong, but sometimes *photos that I never posted* appear – I mean, it’s both wrong sequence of photos I put in the gallery AND the showing of photos I never put in the gallery.

Hi @completelyriveting –
I’m trying to reproduce this, but it appears to be working correctly on my side. For example, when I click on this post:
I open the following image:
Clicking “Next” takes me to this image:
That image is the next image inline here:
https://richardjkarty.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=590&action=edit
Could you please point me to a specific post on your site where you’re having this issue?
-
Thank you for the reply. It is happening in that very post (and all the others). Did you try any photos besides just the one? In that post, the first two photos are in correct sequence but after that things are out of order*.
Here are two posts along with the sequence in which the photos appear when you click on the photo to go to the next one, starting with the first. The numbers you see below refer only to the sequence in the thumbnails view. (In other words, the jpeg files themselves are not numbered 1,2,3 etc. You have to ‘manually’ count through the thumbnails. The easiest way to see the problem is to open two browser windows side-by-side, one showing the thumbnails and the other showing the full-size individual photo.)
All sequences should read, of course, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc.
1 2 9 10 4 5 6 13 3 12 11 7 8 14
So for example, the third photo in the Bonn gallery thumbnails is a 3-story house with hedge in front, looking up at an angle. But the third photo in the full-size ‘clicking through’ is a yellow building that says POSTAMT with people in front, which is #9 in the thumbnails view.
========================1 3 24 23 22 4 20
=========================
* you do get little scraps of the correct sequence, e.g. 9 10 4 5 6 13 3. So the 4 5 6 in there is a correct fragment but it comes after 9 10.
-
PS, two things:
1) I tried a different theme and it didn’t make any difference. The sequences remained the same in each respective gallery.
2) The sequence within each respective gallery do not change AFAIK. So for example, if I’m getting 1 3 24 23 22 4 20 in the Cologne gallery, I get that consistently and identically in that gallery.

Hi there,
When you click on an image in that gallery, you’re taken to the image’s attachment page. The “Next” and “Previous” links on an image’s attachment page don’t necessarily follow the same order as a gallery you add to your post. Rather, they correspond with the next and previous images that are attached to that post, and they’ll follow the order of the images uploaded to your Media Library and attached to the post. (The carousel, in contrast, is directly related to the image gallery and follows the order of the images in the gallery.)
To ensure that your attachment pages follow the same order as your galleries, I’d recommend uploading the images in the exact order you want them to appear in your gallery. That way, the images will be attached to the post in that order so the “Next” and “Previous” links follow the same order as your gallery.
-
Thanks. That is not always true, though, and it doesn’t explain other some other problems.
– Images do not follow the order in the Media Library:
– Images showing up that are not in the gallery at all:
(Ten out of nineteen images in the “Next / Previous” sequence are not in that gallery!)
– Image missing although it is in the gallery:
-
Thanks for providing those additional examples. Can you provide details about how you created those posts (including the exact steps you took to upload the images and create the galleries in the posts)? That will help me investigate the difference between those posts and the expected behavior of the attachment pages.

Three sections here: creating a new gallery, editing an exisiting one, and adding images directly to the Media Library when not editing a post.
TO UPLOAD NEW PHOTOS AND PUT THEM IN A GALLERY IN A NEW POST:
– Posts > Add New
– ‘Format’ box on right -> choose Standard
– Add Media button
– On the Insert Media pop-up: Upload files tab
– Drag & drop photos from my file manager
– Click ‘Create Gallery’ in upper left corner. The just-uploaded files are already checked
– Click ‘Create a new gallery’ in lower right
– Settings: Link to Attachment Page; Columns usually 4 or 5; Size – Thumbnail; Type – thumnbail grid
– Type in captions as needed
– If needed, drag and drop to reorder images
– Insert Gallery
– Back in main Add Post page: type text as needed; Save Draft; Publish=====================================================
TO EDIT AN EXISTING GALLERY:– All Posts > Hover over desired post’s title > Edit
– In the Edit Post page: click in the main text box > hover over thumbnails > click on pencil icon in upper left to get to Edit Gallery windowThen do some or all of the folllowing as needed:
– Drag to reorder images
– Click on X in upper right of a thumbnail to delete image from gallery
– Add more images using Add to Gallery > click on a thumbnail > Add to Gallery in lower right
– Change Gallery Settings > ColumnsSave the changes:
– Update Gallery in lower right > takes you back to Edit Post
– click Update button in the Publish box
==========================================TO UPLOAD IMAGES WHEN NOT EDITING A PARTICULAR GALLERY
I rarely do this. It’s for uploading images directly to the Media Library when I am not on the page for editing a particular post.
– Media > Add New > Drag and drop from my file manager. [No further steps needed]
-
Thanks for those details. Can you tell me which of those methods you used for the specific posts you mentioned earlier?
-
Basically, the first two methods, namely, create a new post/gallery with images all uploaded simultaneously; and later edit that gallery.
Usually all the photos for any one gallery are uploaded all in one batch when the post and gallery are first created – that is, the first method. On rare occasions I need to go back and upload an entirely new image and add it to a gallery.
Example sequence:
– Create new post; Add Media; upload 15 new images using drag-and-drop
– Create new gallery; decide to include only 12 of the 15 images; reorder using drag-and-drop
– Finish post; publish
– Edit the gallery several (many!) times by reordering, deleting or adding images – but in almost all cases, the added images were already uploaded in the original batch. Editing happens any time from immediately to several days later.– Don’t know if this matters, but when I add/remove images, it’s only a few – I believe anywhere from 1 to 4. I do not recall ever doubling the size of a gallery, or cutting it half, or taking a dozen photos out of one gallery and adding them to another. I do 90% of the photo selection and grouping on my computer *before* uploading to WordPress.
