Gallery Problem

I indicated the order of photos in a gallery but WordPress keeps changing it. How do I maintain the order I want?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy writegardener!
The order in which the images appear in the Gallery
Depends on the way you Add MediaThe order in which images are added to the media library, they will appear in the same order, just try to add them the way you want them and set the gallery again, and let us know how it goes.
Would be happy to assist you further..! -
Hi there, what @pavanraheja mentioned is correct when you are using image attachment pages to display your Gallery images.
However, if you are using the default Image Gallery Carousel, you can rearrange the order of your Gallery images in the Gallery Media Edit tab. Remember to both click update your Gallery and update your Post to save the changes.
If you still have questions or issues with this, please post back here with a direct link to the post or page that has the Gallery you need help with.

Thanks fro responding. I am a super newbie so don’t laugh when you see my site. :-) Here is the link to it:
https://soulsatisfactionsite.wordpress.com/FYI, I don’t understand what an attachment page is but I wanted the gallery to always appear on my first page (which it does).
However, I wanted the photos to appear in the order I place them (which it doesn’t, even when I manually change it). These are the steps I’ve gone through:
Theme – customize
Widgets – blog sidebar
Gallery
Link to attachment page (?)
Style – tiles
Choose images – edit gallery
(3 columns)
FYI, even if I select
2 columns with “medium” sized photos for tiled mosaic, WP reverts to 3 columns, thumbnail size and grid.VERY FRUSTRATING indeed. I hope you can help me solve this dilemma.
Thank you in advance,
Robyn

No laughing; it’s lovely. :)
So it’s the Gallery *widget* and not a Gallery feature in a page or post? Different animal. I’ll do some testing during the day and come back to you.
Do you have a Gallery feature anywhere else on your site or only in the widget?
-
Here’s what I found: After you add the widget in the Customizer and click “Choose Images,” select your multiple images and click “Add to Gallery” you can then drag and drop the images to rearrange them in the order that you want them to appear. Ignore all the settings listed under GALLERY SETTINGS on the right side of that screen. You only need to click “Insert Gallery.” That will land you back in the Gallery widget’s settings.
From there, you can select what the images in the Gallery will link to. For most uses, the best option is the Carousel as it is the easiest for visitors to navigate. You can also choose whether you want your images to load in random order or the order you set. Lastly, choose the Style of Gallery you want to display. (A full explanation of the different Gallery styles can be found in the Gallery Support doc that @pavanraheja linked to earlier.)
Once you’ve done that, you can close the widget and SAVE & PUBLISH to make it active on your site.
There is a lot of background story to why the Gallery behaves the way it does, but if you have any question, please let us know.

I’m also tagging this for Staff to alert them to the appearance of GALLERY SETTINGS in the widget set up screen because those settings do not appear in the screenshots in this Support guide. https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/gallery-widget/#choose-images-for-your-gallery
Here’s a temporary screenshot to show what I mean. This is confusing when adding the Gallery widget

Thanks for researching and responding. I thought I did the steps you state above but will print this out and try again later when I return.
BTW, I did not select (or want) random order or carousel. I just wanted the photos I selected in the order I selected to always appear on the right side of the front page… As mentioned, even if I select 2 columns with “medium” sized photos for tiled mosaic, WP reverts to 3 columns, thumbnail size and grid…
Thanks; I’ll give you an update either way.

P.S. In reviewing Pavanraheja’s link above for Gallery help, could it be my theme that is defaulting to something else (that I don’t want)? I believe it’s the tiled mosaic in rectangular tiles (various sizes….some larger than others) I’ve trying to achieve… So, let’s say if I have 9 photos and I manually change the order within the widget so that a very small photo in slot 4 for instance, would appear in slot 1, WP will not put that photo in the slot I want…
Perhaps I should delete the entire gallery and start over?

You’re welcome.
Remember: ignore any settings in that first screen (where you select and can rearrange your images). The settings for how the images display in the Gallery widget are in the widget itself.

@kokkieh – Just to clarify, what’s being updated? :) The problem seems to be with the confusing extra set of Gallery Settings in the screen that opens after clicking the “Choose Images” button. If I’m not being clear, let me know because it might be due to lack of sleep and/or coffee and/or both.
@writegardener – I am so sorry that I overlooked your second reply which apparently you posted right when I posted my “you’re welcome” reply.
You can go ahead and remove and recreate the Gallery widget if you wish, but if you are using the Tiles style, you have no control over the size of each image in the mosaic. That is determined by a number of factors including the height/width ratio of your images. However, the gallery should display the images in the order that you selected.
Can I make a suggestion? If you are still not able to get the order to your liking, please take 2 screenshots:
1. of the screen where you can rearrange the images in the widget, in the order that you want them to appear. (my temp screenshot) Remember to IGNORE everything on the right side of that screen.
2. of the Customizer screen after you insert the new gallery or update the existing one. (my temp screenshot)That way we’ll be able to compare with what appears in the actual widget itself.
Can I make another suggestion? Your images are so much larger than what is currently appearing in the attachment page option. Try the Carousel and see if you don’t like that better.

Yep, lack of sleep talking. :)
Here’s how you take a screenshot and how you can let us see it here in your forum reply: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

That doc doesn’t appear to have been updated in quite some time, so I suspect it’s the screen shots that are outdated. I’m following up on that to make sure if the screen shots should be updated, or if there’s a problem with the widget setup itself.

Hi Justjennifer,
Sorry for my delayed response as learning how to do the screenshot has been another feat.
Preferred Order for Gallery Photos is the order I want the photos to appear (in a style that is some large photos, some small)
NewPictgure.bmp is 2.-how the images actually appear (but I don’t want them to look the way WP shows them,e.g. I want the first and last photos to be the largest ones for instance).
I wasn’t crazy about the appearance of photos in “carousel.” I like the random sizes in a column on the right side of my front page but I would like to choose which photos are large or small, and in the order they appear. Perhaps I need to be selecting something else?
Thanks again for any help you can provide.
Best,
Robyn

Hi there and welcome back, you’ll need to save your screenshots as JPEGs or JPGs and upload them to your site’s Media Library. Then you can copy the link and paste it here for us to see. From what you’ve written above, I believe you are replying by email, but we won’t see any attachments that way.
I mentioned above that you can’t select which images are larger or smaller with tiled mosaics. There’s an algorithm that makes that decision automatically based on a number of factors. If you want to completely control the size of the image, then the tiled mosaic isn’t what you want.
-
Sorry, I am so non-tech that I haven’t been able to get the screenshot into photosoftware as JPEG. Perhaps it is just the algorythm that is causing the problem. Thanks for all of your help!

No worries and you’re welcome.
Do try one of the other Styles in the Gallery widget. Hopefully that will do what you need it to do.
