gallery problems – odd size frames and erratic display when clicked
-
I did a practice upload with random images to make a gallery and it worked fine. Then I used the real images and despite sizing them all (in Photoshop) the same height, they all display in random sized boxes. Also, when I click on an image some of them open okay in a slideshow view, but many are inverted. They are .png files showing black graphics on white, but show in the slideshow as white on black. This is driving me crazy. Any ideas?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

According to my dashboard, it is published. Here is the url http://hilarymetcalf.wordpress.com/thermofax-screens-4/
When you hover over two of the images – coffee stains and barcode, they show a grey border. They show up okay when clicked. But the others show the whole box filled with grey when you hover, and they are the ones that invert when clicked.

I think I have figured out why two display properly when clicked and the others don’t. I went back to PS and checked the save for web settings. The poorly displaying ones had transparency turned on. I have re-saved those images without it. Now I just need to get all the boxes the same height.

a) It’s published, but it’s not a post, it’s a static page. When I first visited your blog there were no published posts, so I thought you were referring to a draft. When you ask a question you should link or point to the post or page in question.
b) The boxes aren’t “random sized”, they are thin borders around the actual thumbnails. Your images have varying aspect rations, and the inserted versions are set as thumbnails of equal width, so naturally the heights will vary. If you change the settings to make them all the same height they’ll have different widths. Do you really want that? Also, do you really need the slideshow?

Thank you for that advice. Sorry not to be clear I meant ‘page’, not ‘post’.
I want the thumbnails to all be the same height, not the same width, so they line up in a neat row – it doesn’t matter if they are different widths, although if I could get them all the same size in height and width, that would be a bonus. Is there some way I can achieve that in WP, or will I need to adjust the sizes in PS?
And no, I don’t need or want the slideshow – I just want the viewer to be able to see all the different designs on one page, then be able to click on the one they are interested in for a closer view. But no matter what settings I choose when I insert the the gallery, the slideshow thing is what I get, even though I never select ‘insert slide show’, I can only get an image to open how I want when I click on it if I insert it as a stand alone image. The moment I go to the gallery option I get the slideshow be default.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

a) The carousel slideshow is part and parcel of the gallery feature (when it was introduced we suggested it should be optional, but WP doesn’t listen to users in such cases). Selecting the option “Insert slideshow” would create this type of slideshow:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/#additional-informationb) To turn all the gallery images into thumbnails of the same height, you’d go to Settings > Media and change the default settings for the thumbnail option: you’d enter the height number you prefer, and you’d enter a very large width number so it would have no effect. In my opinion that would be a bad solution, as it would give you neat rows but not so neat columns…
c) Since you don’t want the carousel slideshow (as I expected: it doesn’t lend itself to images of that type and size), you need to insert the images as individual images instead of using the gallery feature.
d) In that case you would be able to create borders of the same height and width around the thumbnails although the images don’t have the same aspect ratio. But this would require very complicated coding in the HTML editor: not worth the trouble. The best and easiest solution is to edit the images in Photoshop, change the canvas size so they all become the same width and height, re-upload and re-insert the new versions one by one, selecting alignment > left (so that they’ll show up in rows) and Link URL > File URL (so that they’ll link to the real size original when clicked).

Thank you so much – it is very kind of you to go to so much trouble to help me. My long term goal is to build my own website – I am learning Dreamweaver through Lynda.com, and finding it challenging, but fascinating.
From my research, WordPress seemed like a good interim option for just getting something out there, to get me going. But I guess this exercise in frustration has reinforced that everything ‘free’ comes with strings attached. Its always a trade off I guess.
But thanks to you I think I now have what I need to get me going with a simple thumbnail ‘gallery’ effect where each image will open individually when clicked.
Much appreciated.

Just wanted to let you know it all worked out great
http://hilarymetcalf.wordpress.com/gallery-test-4/
I would have liked for the description (not the caption) to show when the image is clicked and goes to the large version. I think I got it to do that yesterday, but it seems that only works in the gallery view
Anyway – I am more than happy with what I have at the moment, and it will do for now until I get a full bells and whistles website.
thanks

You’re welcome.
If you want the descriptions to show up when you click on the thumbnails, then you should select Post URL instead of File URL. See here:Uploading and inserting images: the three (plus one) link options
