Gallery Question on Sela Theme

Please take a look at my blog and let me know how I can accomplish two things…

    1. When I add more photos to the current gallery, they only display/expand vertically down the page creating a lot of white space to the right of the gallery. How can I get the gallery to add photos horizontally?

    2. As an alternative, we could do two galleries side by side to balance the page. How do I accomplish that? When I add another footer + gallery, it displays under the current gallery, again leaving too much white space.

When setting up your theme’s front page, the first place to look is its Showcase page https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sela/ This will also give you information about the special page templates available for your chosen theme.

I checked http://themangoseed.com/ and I see what you mean: https://cloudup.com/cNYaRMKB3AZ

I researched the widget and I found that gallery widget itself defaults to a width of 265px which fits most sidebar areas in most themes. I have added a request to see if it might be possible to make the widget display wider in wider widget areas such as the front page and footer widget areas in Sela.

In the mean time, you can add three galleries in a row to the first, second, and third front page sidebar areas in Appearance > Widgets to get an effect that looks like this: https://cloudup.com/c4JNnqFgjFu

    Howdy!

At this time, the Gallery will display at the default width of 265px when used in widget areas, no matter how wide the widget areas themselves may be; that may change in a future update, but I don’t have an estimate as to when. I think Sheri’s three galleries solution should work, though.

    I hope this clarifies!

    Cheers,

Thanks! We currently have 3 galleries – per Sheri’s advice – but they are displaying in different sizes, even though all 3 galleries only have 5 photos and are all set to the tile function. Trying to solve that problem!

  • I don’t think there’s way to force the three galleries to have the same height. Tiled galleries use an algorithm to best fit the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle, but it’s not really possible to specify a certain height for the gallery as a whole. Sorry about that!

  • Just to clarify, because your images in each gallery have different ratios, that’s what’s causing this effect – some are horizontal (landscape), some vertical (portrait) and still others are square. If you stick to the same combination for each gallery – say, make them all square in all three galleries, or 4 landscape and 1 portrait in each gallery (in the same order) – I think the heights will end up being the same.

    Oh that makes sense! Thanks!

  • My pleasure! Forgot to mention that you’ll also need to keep the number of images per gallery the same, in addition to consistent ratios. Right now the one on the left only has four images, while the others each have five.
