gallery stretching thumbnail images

I have an page where I have used the square tiles gallery to display some images. When I first created it, the square thumbnails it automatically created were cropped versions of the full images, which I was happy with. I have recently noticed however that the thumbnails now are stretched or squashed images, which looks terrible. It was working fine initially, and I’m not sure why it’s changed.

    The gallery is here: https://andrewwoolf.co.uk/gallery/

and also the same on a recent blog post here: https://andrewwoolf.co.uk/2019/05/06/alvorada-album-launch-photos/

The theme is Dara. I’m on a basic account so don’t use any plugins.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

On two different sites, one with Dara activated and one with another theme activated, by choosing the “Square Tiles” option, I was able to replicate the effects you’ve described. Images that aren’t originally square are distorted, being both stretched and compressed. The “Circles” gallery type also produced a similar effects.

It was working fine initially, and I’m not sure why it’s changed.

I’m unable to confirm that the square tiles option previously produced different results, so I’ll call for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

  • Hm, I recall them being cropped, not stretched, originally.

    We’ll look into this, thanks!

If it helps any, I was looking at this the other day and it looks like the issue lies in how the images are originally resized for thumbnails.

You’ll notice if you try the Block Editor (Jetpack) gallery, that the thumbnails there look as you’d expect them to be. Inspecting the elements lets you see that the image being displayed is a cropped resizing of the original. The Classic Editor gallery doesn’t do this extra step, simply squashing the image for the thumbnail.

The Block Editor gallery has a different drawback though – if you’re using the carousel to display a slideshow of the images when clicked on, you’ll notice that the ‘full size’ images are distorted – instead of showing the original image itself, the carousel displays the cropped thumbnail image stretched to the proportions of the original.

Galleries created with the Classic Editor show the original source image with correct proportions in their carousels.

The issues might be linked, or could help create a fix for each other.

Like @lorrell287, I also suspect that the way thumbnails are created and handled on the Dara theme may be a factor in the issue described in the OP. However, the reason for my suspicion is the discovery of another striking issue regarding how galleries work on the Dara theme, that involves thumbnails.

My tests using the WP-Admin editor reveal that images in galleries where Link to “Attachment Page” is selected in the gallery settings, whether the images are attached or unattached to content, display as thumbnails when you open them to the attachment page from the gallery.

Why would someone want an image in a gallery to link to a single page that displays a thumbnail of the image, in some cases even smaller than the corresponding gallery thumbnail? This effect can be seen in warden91’s Gallery page, and also in Dara demo pages featuring galleries, for example, the Flowers and Weddings pages. In each case the images are linked to attachment pages that display thumbnail images that are either slightly larger or slightly smaller than the corresponding thumbnails appearing in the gallery.

As a result of the thumbnails issue describe above, when a gallery on Dara is set to display images on their attachment pages, displaying the full-size version of a gallery image is a challenge. When you choose to either “view” the image or to open its attachment page in a tab or another window, it displays the image as a thumbnail. In order for a visitor to display the image at full-size one must alter the location address of the attachment page, removing the dimensions info appended to the address that reduces the full-size image to a thumbnail.

On my primary site, with a different theme activated, a gallery image never links to a thumbnail image unless I’ve chosen the gallery setting Link to “None.” I always want a visitor or myself to be able to easily view the full-size image and to have it displayed on its own attachment page. So about 99% of the images on my site, whether displayed in a gallery or not, are linked to an attachment page, where they may always be displayed at full size.

Just updating with my situation. Thank you very much for the responses. I skimmed them briefly a while ago, and confess I didn’t fully understand everything, and have only just got round to finding a moment to properly try to look into them. However… in the meantime, the thumbnails have reverted to the cropped format which they were in initially….!!! So they are now back as I wish them to be, and all is well. (For the time being?)
