Gallery style posts on home page without using gallery display

  Hi sorry after some searching I couldn’t find out how to make thumbnails out of my images, so that on the home (/posts) page a thumbnail appears on the left with an excerpt of text, and then when you open the post the image goes back to normal size as displayed in the post.

  I really like the gallery look on the home page and archives, but obviously the ‘this contains 1 photo’ thing isn’t ideal.

  I understand that I could replicate the style by using the ‘more’ line to shorten the amount of text seen on the home page, but how do I get that thumbnail on the left?
