Gallery Thumbnail Size

When making a photo gallery using the block editor I find the thumbnails ridiculously small. Most of the space on the page is wasted white space. Is there a way to enlarge them or should I just quit trying.

BTW, I’m using the Twenty Fourteen theme.

Hi,

When making a photo gallery using the block editor I find the thumbnails ridiculously small.

I’m going to leave it to others to address issues specific to the Block Editor, but very small thumbnails can be produced when using the Classic Editor as well. With the Classic Editor, factors determining the size of the thumbnail images include the following:

• The width of the content area in a post or page, which WordPress.com calls the “main content column width” or just “main column width” — This varies dependent upon the theme. According to the Quick Specs section of the Twenty Fourteen theme overview, the main column width is 474 pixels. That’s very narrow, and choosing the Full Width Page Template option doesn’t widen the content area, it only hides any widgets in the sidebar widget area and centers the content area between two large margins.
• The number of columns chosen in the gallery settings
• The number of images in the gallery
• The gallery image size and gallery type settings

In some cases, one setting will override another. Evidence suggests that the above factors may affect image display size in galleries created in the Block Editor as well, though I haven’t done any recent testing to point to.

Example:
The images in the gallery on your page Photo Gallery are quite small because it looks like you’ve chosen to display them in six columns of square tiles. The size setting is overridden in this case because in order to fit six columns into a space of 470 pixels width, each image must be roughly 78 pixels wide.

Changing the columns setting to “3” would increase the size, in area, of each image by four (2 X 2), and changing the columns setting to “2” would increase the size of each image by nine (3 x 3).

Themes with a Full Width Template option may be found here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-width-template, but, as we’ve seen in the case of Twenty Fourteen, the designation “Full Width Template” doesn’t guarantee a wide page content area. Some themes with wider page content area include the following, which were the first three search results:

• Altofocus — main content column width 770 pixels
• Penscratch — main column width 656 pixels, except in the full-width template, where it’s 937 pixels
• Dara — main column width 675 pixels, except with the full-width, no sidebar option applied where it’s 778 pixels

I’ve called for staff. Hopefully they’ll be able to fix the formatting error evidently caused by my post above, resulting in the sidebar widgets being moved out of place, etc.

• @musicdoc1 you’re all set. Looks like a closing
tag was used at the start of your list instead of
which is something I’ve personally done plenty of times in the past.

Thanks for all your help!
