Gallery widget isn't working in spun

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a gallery widget in the side bar, and I add pictures to it and it tells me they are there, but on the web page I don’t see them. I am using a tablet, could that be it?
I hope this is the right place to ask. I am new here and I don’t really understand much on computers.

One other question if you have time. If I upgraded to the 30 dollar custom site, would I be able to make the text background clear, so all you saw behind the text was the custom back ground on spun?

    Here’s my site, pelicanjess.wordpress.com

    Thank you thank you!

Spun doesn’t have a “sidebar” but widgets appear in the footer, which is closed by default. However, after adding it to the footer in my test blog, I don’t see the Gallery widget in the footer area either, so I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to this thread if you haven’t already so that you will see their answer and please be patient while waiting.

This issue with Spun has been reported, but it remains an unresolved issue. I’ve updated the report with your information, but I do not yet have an ETA for when this may be fixed for you. I’ll let you know if I get an update from our developers.

    Thanks so much!
    Thanks!
Hey, one more thing if you have time. I tried to add a music player widget too, I put a URL in but it just displays as writing that does not play or link. I have also tried imbedding a YouTube video and a spotify video using the short code. And I figured these would show up as music that would be playable as you browse my page, but they show up as downloads that take you to their original pages. I read all of the audio instructions I could find but I can’t figure it out. And I’ve seen that other sites can play their music directly from their page.
One thing I was thinking is that I am writing from a tablet that doesn’t support flash, so maybe my readers on computers can listen to the links on my page even though I can’t?
I would greatly appreciate it if you could set my mind at ease on this, or send me to the right place to talk to the folks who will explain to me what I am doing wrong.
Thank you so much for your time!

Embedding video from YouTube shows the video as displayed on YouTube, with the same controls.

What kind of audio are you trying to use? We have a number of audio players, as well as the ability to upload your own music, so the process and results will be different for the different audio options.

Both of the links I am using now are from spotify. I may do the space upgrade in the future, but I haven’t yet.
Here are the pages of my blog that have short code embedded links to spotify songs.

    http://pelicanjess.wordpress.com/2014/01/05/oh-the-coo-coo/

    http://pelicanjess.wordpress.com/2014/01/04/some-context/

On my iPad the songs show up as a link that takes you to spotify, even though the instructions for the short code said they should show up as a little play button. but my device doesn’t support flash, so maybe that’s why i don’t get to see a play button? (I don’t have access to a real computer here to check).

So I thought I’d try using the music player widget that is available in the widget window of my spun theme, it has a button that says ‘add music’ so I pushed that, then it asked me if I wanted to up load something or if I had a URL, so I pushed the URL button. Then I put the URL (for the spotify song) in the box it gave me to put the URL in, then I hit ok, and it told me ok, and every thing was saved and all the works. But then when I checked in on it on my actual blog, there was the word “music” in the footer with all the other little widgets, but there was no music under it (same as how the gallery widget displays the word “gallery” with a little empty space underneath where all the pictures are supposed to be. Which is why I thought maybe this would be on topic with that, but now I am starting to feel a little guilty that this is actually a whole other topic that by rights should be in a whole other thread).
I don’t even know what the music player widget does or if I need a widget music player, because I couldn’t get the one in spun to work, so I couldn’t see how it worked.

But I do need to be able to have individual songs play on individual pages while those pages are being read. And I am having a hard time figuring out how that is done. And that makes this email entirely off topic of the original thread, and I apologize for that.

Can you tell me where to read about all of the different audio players that wordpress has and how they work and what they are for?
Would you mind telling me if those songs I put on those pages up there will play at my blog or if they redirect to the spotify page for you as well? You don’t have to, but I sure would appreciate it.

Aiyiyi! I am a needy needy newbie.

Thank you so much Miss Jackie for your time!

    Oh shoot!
I just saw the link you sent.
That is one of the pages I keep reading and reading. That’s the one that tells you how to put the YouTube and the spotify in. But still when I did all of these things, the links that would appear on my page would take me away from the page and open a you tube page or a spotify page, depending.
Thanks for that link though, is that the only instructions for audio players and things?
I don’t know why I am not getting this.

When you include a link to Spotify on your blog, it is not a download link. Instead, it will open up Spotify in a new window. There may be devices that will not work with Spotify and in those instances, the song will not play.

You cannot upload songs from Spotify to your blog as you do not actually possess the song files. You can only upload files you personally have on your computer.

Most of the audio options we make available provide embedded music players or links to the services where the songs are hosted. So if the music isn’t available on those services (some which have libraries, like Spotify, and some which allow for users to upload their own content) you can’t use that particular player.

What I would recommend is that you create a link to the song that says something like “Listen to this song on Spotify” and then include the link as you have done so far. If the song isn’t on Spotify, you might be able to find a video of the song on YouTube and embed that instead.

Finally, the audio page I linked before has links to documentation on how to use the different third-party services in the small box at the top of the page under “Related”.

Oooooh. Ok, I think what you are telling me is that the only way that I can make a song play on my blog with out the reader having a new page (spotify etc) open is if I get a space up grade and put in songs that I own. And that my best free alternative is to inform my reader that they should click on the spotify link I gave them, then come back to my window and read on while spotify plays dutifully in the background in a window nobody wants to look at.

And also that there is no way to get a YouTube video to play directly on my page, it is just going to have to open up its own page to play its self on.

If the answer is yes it is ok if you don’t reply any more, and if the answer is no it is ok if you throw your hands up in the air and say something profane and/or cathartic. I really appreciate your help. I am going to look in to finding a similarly knowledgable friend or acquaintance who can stand over my shoulder while I struggle through this who will say things like “no. Not that button. Jeez.”

    Hope your days are lovely!

This is correct. Spotify links will open in a web-based Spotify player.

I use Spotify daily and have not yet discovered a way to get a link to open up the desktop application instead. Perhaps someone else reading this thread will know how to do that. :)

If you embed a YouTube video (which is as easy as pasting a link to the video on its own line in a blog post or page) the video will display within your blog post rather than opening a new window. You can tweak the display options as well, by following the instructions here:

    Hi there!

Thanks for your patience while we worked this out; it’s a tricky one. The Gallery widget should be working in your Spun theme now. I hope this helps! :)

    Cheers,
    Caroline
