gallery widget tech problem
-
I noticed recently that my gallery widget is out of wack. There are 2 problems with it.
First, it is off-center and I can find no way of correcting this.
Second, our gallery widget has always been set to randomize since day one. It no longer randomizes.
we have tried several thing to correct this, but nothing we have tried has changed these tech errors. Can you please check the problem for us. We would really appreciate it. Thank you :)

Howdy!
First, it is off-center and I can find no way of correcting this.
The sidebar widget area has all widgets aligned to the left, with enough margin to the left of that to keep it clear of the primary content area. While off-center within the widget area it is in line with your other widgets.
If you want it aligned center within the the widget area you manually adjust its margin with this Custom CSS:
#gallery-2{ margin-left: 30px; }Adding Custom CSS to a site is part of the Premium plan upgrade.
You can also add galleries within your primary content area if that’s what you’d prefer:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#adding-a-gallery-or-slideshow
Second, our gallery widget has always been set to randomize since day one. It no longer randomizes.
The Random order isn’t meant to randomize the order every time a page loads, rather it’s meant to randomize the order one time, when you save the gallery. Basically the tile gallery will disregard the order in which you uploaded the images and try to fit them together as best it can.
Let me know if you have more questions about working with galleries. :)

Hi
I understand about the gallery alignment, thank youConcerning the gallery randomizing
Yes …it used to randomize ‘every time’ the page was reload/ revisited.
We know this, because we all have checked it repeatedly during the first 6 months
After we joined wordpress to make sure everything was working properly on
A regular basis. And also because it was one of the features we liked best about
Wordpress. However, we have all been very busy this past year, and did not
Have the time to try to correct the randomizing situation. Therefore, I am assuming what you are trying to tell me is, that our gallery
Randomized initially for the first year, was some sort of technical glitch then?
Since, I am myself a computer programmer with 20 years of experience, I think
You will understand why I cannot accept that explanation.Having said that, the widgets being off center is more recent and more important
To the look & feel of our page. So I decided to take the time to inquire about both
At the same time. However< these problems are not major and we can live with them
For the time being. We thank you for your reply and wish you & yours a very happy holiday season :)
Kindest regards,

Hi again,
First off, let me apologize for my previous answer. I read some of the documentation on the Gallery widget that made me think the random only occurred on setup — which explained why going into the widget settings and unclicking/clicking Random, then saving, would make the gallery display in a new random order.
Your reply had me read the documentation again, and you’re right, the gallery should randomize with refreshes.
I’m doing some testing and I believe I can replicate the issue, but it appears it might be the result of some server side caching — where I see the order randomize if I clear my cache and force refresh after waiting an hour or so.
Would you let me know if you see the same behavior?
That being said, I’m not sure why the gallery widget would cache like that when galleries within posts/pages do not. I can see them randomize with quick, multiple refreshes. Given that I”m going to have a developer take a look into this further.
Best,

Thank you for your reply and your honesty. You would be surprised at some of the things people try to tell me not knowing that I have been a
Programmer for many years. Lol Most people are not as honest about programming errors. I must say I find it very refreshing. As I said previously nothing I tried to do made any difference to the randomizing. I am always clearing my browser cache for one reason or another.
As well as all the what I call dead-end files. Widget do not normally have a cache. Unless you add a cache plugin. I know WP has cache plugin, but
I have never felt the need for one.I have not noticed any changes in the randomizing problem from clearing the cache. However, I have noticed that whenever we add or change anything
On the site and save it, the gallery randomizes once after each save. However the photos on the side widget are supposed to randomize whenever the
Page is refreshed or re-visited. The fact that is no longer does …sort of defeats the purpose of having the option lolIf you speak to the developers, maybe you can ask them to fix my widgets being off-centered. Sorry accidentally deleted your original email when trying
To clear out all my junk mail. As that is more problematic than a random gallery widget that no longer randomizes :PPlease let us know if you find out anything further and thank you again

Hi there,
Just wanted to offer a quick update. While no developer has yet had the time to resolve my ticket on the non-randomizing issue, I did think of an idea. I’ve tested it out, and it appears that if you’ll use a Gallery shortcode within a Text Widget, the gallery will randomize (so long as you use the “orderby=random” attribute. Instruction on using a Gallery Shortcode here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode
This workaround could let you get the randomization back right away, instead of waiting until our development team has time to fix the issue with the Widget.
