Garbage appearing at the end of posts

  • Unknown's avatar

When I select an individual post, I suddenly get this at the end, below the Comment box. Is this some by-product of the permanent tinkering going on with the interface at WordPress? How can I get rid of it?

You may use these HTML tags and attributes: <abbr title=””> <acronym title=””> <b>

    <cite>

     <del datetime=""> <i> <q cite=""> <strike>

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That is the allowable markup (HTML) permitted in comments. Some themes have that info for the commenter’s reference, and some do not.

If you don’t want it there, you will have to change themes. In some themes you can remove it via the CSS upgrade if you have CSS editing experience, but in some themes it is tied in with other stuff and cannot be removed without removing other things.

Hmm. Thanks. But it was never there with my theme until today. Any idea what I do in the CSS box to get rid?

How come it just appeared? It looks clunky. By all means give us editing buttons in the comment box, but anyone who knows html doesn’t really need these prompts, and anyone who doesn’t won’t understand them anyway.

From what I can remember (it has been quite a while since I messed with White as Milk) it has always had that below the comment box.

    .form-allowed-tags {display: none; }

  • Unknown's avatar

    Definitely not in my case.

    Do I delete .form-allowed-tags {display: none; } in CSS?

    Thanks

You add that to your custom CSS, right at the bottom would be my suggestion.

  • Unknown's avatar

Or do I add that, I guess …?

  • Unknown's avatar

You beat me to it. I’ll have a try.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep! It worked. Thanks very much …

But I have another question. HOW did that change occur? Once I use a theme, surely the original creator of the theme can’t mess with it. So what happened?

Also, when editing, they offer a choice of add to theme stylesheet or start from scratch.
What’s the difference? I used the default — start from scratch. Does that mean that I overwrote previous CSS edits to the theme? (As far as I can tell I did not do that.)

As I said, I remember it being there on that theme. Perhaps during some theme updates by staff it was “removed” due to an error or bug.

The thing is, staff are constantly updating themes here so that they will work with each new version of wordpress and to support new features that are added. It could be it fell away in one of those updates and then was “fixed” in another update.

My preferred way of doing CSS here is to only put into the CSS edit window the specific selectors, and the specific declarations that I am adding or changing and then select “add to existing…” The reason for this is that CSS will have relative URLs for any images and such used in the CSS. When you get the CSS upgrade, YOUR CSS file is stored in a different directory which means all the relative links will be broken.

I only use “start from scratch” if I am going to completely redo everything in the CSS (such as with Sandbox).

  • Unknown's avatar

So on the last point, “start from scratch” gets you back to the virgin theme and overwrites previous edits you made?

  • Unknown's avatar

Add to existing… keeps the existing CSS and then anything you put into the CSS edit window will add to or overwrite like things in the original CSS.

Start from scratch… will disable the existing CSS stylesheet and the ONLY thing that will get applied to the theme is what you put into the CSS edit window.

  • Unknown's avatar

So I’m losing all my previous edits. Any way of getting them back?

(Or am I not getting it?)

    Thanks again.

One other note for anyone coming to this thread later. Pasting the entire stylesheet into the CSS edit box and having “add to existing…” selected will in many cases mess up your blog and some of your edits may not work.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, whatever you have done up until now should still be working as it did. Adding what I told you to add to the end of the CSS edit window will only make the allowed tags disappear.

  • Unknown's avatar

Even though I “started from scratch”?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you pasted the entire stylesheet into the edit box and selected “start from scratch…” then all of the CSS is in there. With White as Milk, it shouldn’t make a big difference since it does not contain any images in the design.

  • Unknown's avatar

I didn’t paste, just edited what was already there.

  • Unknown's avatar

Typically “what is already there” is just a bit of informational babble, with no CSS.

Did you have another theme before this one that you had done CSS edits to? If so, then that is the CSS for the other theme and CSS is theme specific, meaning that the CSS from one theme can for the most part not be used with another since each author decides what they are going to name classes and IDs in the CSS.

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I just downloaded the theme. I then have made 2 or 3 series of minor edits. The latest was based on your input today. Bottom line — whether I started from scratch or not, each of these successive edits has been retained.

That’s if I understand you correctly. Sorry if you’re having to repeat yourself, but hopefully this thread will help others. Pity we can’t rename it.
