Garbage appearing at the end of posts

Are you self-hosted? Sounds like you are if you “downloaded” the theme. If that is the case, then you need to be over at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that is where self-hosted blogs are supported.

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I’m at .com. Downloaded in sense of selected, chose.

Since I can’t see your dashboard, I really can’t understand what you are talking about.

When I go to appearance > edit CSS and I have not edited any CSS, what I see in the window is some informational text. No CSS there at all. To add CSS to that window, I have to (or should) delete all the informational text and then add whatever changes or additions I want to make and select “add to existing… ” and then save. One of the big benefits to this is that all that is in the CSS edit window are my change so it is easier to see what I have changed when I go back into it months later. If I paste the entire CSS in their, it is highly unlikely that I will even change 10% of what is there and months down the line I won’t even really remember what I changed.

If I am going to completely rewrite the CSS, or if I am going to create my own then I use the “start from scratch…”

Here are the first three lines I see when I go to a CSS edit window on a blog that has not had any CSS done to it.

    /* Welcome to Custom CSS!

If you are familiar with CSS or you have a stylesheet ready to paste, you may delete these comments and get started.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a kind of code that tells the browser how to render a web page. Here’s an example:

My stylesheet editor does not show that.

I guess I am after a yay or nay to – “I have made 2 or 3 series of minor edits. The latest was based on your input today. Bottom line — whether I started from scratch or not, each of these successive edits has been retained.”

Thanks again and sorry if I’m being stupid.

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome, and not being stupid, it is just that since I can’t see your dashboard, I’m not quite understanding what you are seeing or saying.

The only thing that is important is that your changes are working and we were able to solve this issue for you.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. I’ll play around with a dummy to try and figure how this really works.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not quite understanding either. For the record, the wp.com version of White as Milk didn’t and still doesn’t have that HTML guide.

  • Unknown's avatar

I totally agree!! thesacredpath insisted that it did. That made it very mysterious that it suddenly started showing. I have used this theme since 2006 and I know what it looks like.

It was definitely showing on your .COM blog, I saw it too, and when I went to one of my test blogs to verify if it was there or not, on my test blog it was not.

    It’s bizarre.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry for the repeat posting above. Even more bizarre is that the Comment field now has this above it —- Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked *

You helped me get rid of the last bit of rubbish. Can you help on this one? What could be causing this?

  • Unknown's avatar

Obviously, STAFF are causing this. They are tinkering with themes. If I were you, I’d wait a few days till they stop, otherwise you’re constantly trying to hit a moving target.

  • Unknown's avatar

Isn’t that kind of unethical. I mean, WP is supposed to provide the service. The theme and what it does and doesn’t choose to have in it is me!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, it isn’t. The theme is supplied to you by WordPress. You can buy the CSS upgrade and tinker with the look, but if you’ll read the terms of service you’ll see you agreed to ongoing tinkering by staff. If you want complete theme control, you must leave WP.com and get an independently-hosted blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK! I’ll be patient. But I’m detecting a culture of tinkering at WP nowadays.

I have the CSS upgrade, so when this has settled I might ask for your advice in getting rid of whatever they are trying to foist on me!

I suspect what all this is leading up to is a toolbar for Comments. Which could be helpful.

  • Unknown's avatar

Indeed if blog templates were not updated then how would they become compliant with the sofware ehen it’s updated? No theme or template is “frozen in time”. Every time wordpress software is upgraded to a new version the themers are making the required changes so the templates are compliant with the software.

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know what you mean by a toolbar for comments. I do know that the ability to enter HTML into comments is a feature that I do use when I leave comments.

  • Unknown's avatar

With White as Milk at least, when you post a comment initially, there is no toolbar. You either type in plain text or you enter html. If you type plain text and then want to italicise or whatever, you need to edit the Comment AFTER it’s been published. Which has always been slightly absurd.

As these annoying fragments are appearing around the Comment area, I thought they might be fixing that.
