  do I have to purchase a domain from a separate website and transfer?

  Nope. You can register the domain with WordPress.com.

  First, figure out which plan is going to fit your needs and budget. Those are outlined at https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  Then, you can register your domain. The domain price is included in that plan. Click on My Sites – Domains – Add
