Gateway theme – categories option disappeared in editing or in creating new pages or blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
If I try to edit or create and blog post or page, the option on the left hand side for categories disappeared so have no way to add it. I only see ‘Tags’ and if I try to tag pages or blogs they don’t get tagged.
Not sure if explained enough to know what I mean but I hope someone could help me.
    Thanks
    Eva

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The menu item containing tags and categories is the same in the new editor. It’s titled “Categories & Tags.” So when you open that, you find no categories list, or an option to add a new one?

I only see ‘Tags’ and if I try to tag pages or blogs they don’t get tagged.

In my case, under Categories & Tags I find a list of previously added categories, with a “Add New Category” option, and a list of previously added tag, but without an “Add New Tag” option.

You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

    Eva,

How do you try to add tags, and what happens when you make such an attempt?

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. So, instead of “Categories & Tags” it is only “Tags” so categories completely disappeared without an option to add them. Not even the default “uncategorised” is visible.
And hence the tags don’t work. So if I tag a page or post they don’t get tagged. So, nothing happens.
If I go to WP Admin and go to Posts –>Categories, the categories are listed there.
If I create a new page or post, the “Categories & Tags” is replaced with just “Tags” as explained above.
    Hope this makes sense.

If I create a new page or post, the “Categories & Tags” is replaced with just “Tags” as explained above.

I was unable to duplicate this on the “new” editor, which I presumed you were referring to because you said in the OP,

the option on the left hand side for categories disappeared

However, it’s easy to make the Categories module in the wp-admin post or page editor disappear by simply unchecking the box labeled “Categories”at Screen Options. And you can make it reappear again by checking the same box. Don’t know if that might help. If not, then I suggest you add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar to call for staff attention.

Screeen Options is a drop-down menu found at the top of many wp-admin dashboard pages, including post and page editors.

    Hi,
Thank you for your replies and trying to help but I’m afraid it doesn’t work. I’m most likely not explaining the problem clearly enough and there is no option to post on here screenshots which makes it even more difficult to explain things.

  • Hi there,

If I edit or create a new post on your site I do see the categories option, so I don’t think the problem is with your site.

Can you please let me know what browser (including version number) and operating system you’re using? You can find that information here:

    http://supportdetails.com/

Can you please check if clearing your browser cache and cookies makes any difference?

A screen shot will also be helpful. You can upload it directly to your media library and I’ll be able to see it there.

    Hello,
    Thank you for your response.

I have both Chrome and Internet Explorer and I checked both. And there is no “Categories & Tags” menu on either.

I attached to the link you sent above, a photo of the “Tags” tab I see currently and on new posts/pages.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

    P.S. I’m using Windows 8.1

  • Thanks for the information, and the screen shot. However, it would help if I can see the entire screen, including the URL appearing in your browser’s address bar.

Did you take that screen shot on a post or a page? Keep in mind that it’s not possible to add categories and tags to pages at all, only to posts. Gateway is an exception to this rule in that you can tag pages as well in Gateway to feature them on the front page, but you can’t add categories to pages on any theme, so you won’t see the categories option if you’re editing a page ( https://wordpress.com/page/). You should see it if editing a post ( https://wordpress.com/post/)
