Gateway theme – featured content not appearing

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having trouble trying to get the featured content area to appear on my site. I use the Gateway theme, where posts tagged as ‘featured’ should appear as the top 3.

However, right now that area doesn’t seem to show up, even though I’ve tried several different tags. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Gateway’s featured content area will only be visible on a page with the Homepage template assigned to it.

You currently don’t have any pages published to your site (only posts). The first step is therefore to publish a page and assign the Homepage template from the editor’s Page Options panel.

From there, set your newly published page as site’s static front page. This can be done via the Static Front Page panel of the WordPress.com Customizer, as demonstrated here:

    Set the Homepage

Let me know if those steps help out or if you have any extra questions.

Hi! Thank you for your help, I’ve managed to work it out based on your instructions. However, I would like to check if it’s possible to also display the remaining latest posts under the featured content section? Currently, the homepage only shows 3 latest posts (eatlooktravelbook.com). Thanks and look forward to your reply!

    Hi there,

It’s not possible to display a listing of all of your posts with Gateway’s Homepage template. You could, however, add some content to the very top of the page and include a link to your main blog page.

To do this, navigate to Theme Options > Homepage Template in the WordPress.com Customizer and then add the text you wish to include in the Hero Content field.

You can use HTML to create a link to your blog, as per the guidance here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/#adding-a-link

If that isn’t quite what you’re after, you could consider a different theme that includes featured content in addition to a listing of your posts.

Gazette, for example, features some posts at the very top of its posts page and then a listing of all posts below that. Another good example of a theme that works similarly is Dyad, which features posts in a slider.

    Hope that’s helpful!

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve activated the Gazette theme, but still have a few questions about it. Is it possible to still have the image displayed on the homepage, but not have it displayed as a large image on the top of the article page (https://eatlooktravelbook.com/2016/08/27/oahu-travel-tips-from-courtney-chun-hawaiian-blogger-of-fork-to-belly/)?

I’ve also noticed that the featured image gets cut off in the homepage. Is there a way to prevent this?

Thanks and look forward to your reply!

    Hi there,

There isn’t a built in setting to disable featured images on individual pages/posts with Gazette.

If you choose to upgrade to WordPress.com Premium or Business in the future, you would then be able to use custom CSS to achieve what you’re after.

I’ve also noticed that the featured imag;ce gets cut off in the homepage. Is there a way to prevent this?

There isn’t any way to prevent the theme cropping the images for use on the home page, as the images all need to fit a uniform size. Images that work best will therefore be more flexible, decorative or abstract, so they can handle some sort of cropping.

Let me know if that information helps out or if you have further questions.

Hi, thank you for your explanation! I’ve also noticed that there is a text ‘Uncategorized’ stated in every article on the homepage. However, all articles have been assigned to a category, e.g. Greece, Conversations with Locals etc. How do I ensure that the word ‘Uncategorized’ doesn’t appear? Thanks!

    Hi there,

Uncategorized is the default category that’s assigned to all posts. All WordPress sites have to have at least one default category that can’t be deleted.

You can rename Uncategorized or remove posts from it via the classic interface.

To access the classic interface, add /wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL. Like so:

    https://eatlooktravelbook.wordpress.com/wp-admin

From there, navigate to Posts > Categories in the left sidebar:

    https://eatlooktravelbook.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

Hover over Uncategorized to see the option to Edit.

You can also change the default category to something else by navigating to My Site in the top left of the main WordPress.com interface and then Settings > Writing:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/writing/eatlooktravelbook.com

Choose the category you wish to use from the Default Post Category dropdown menu. This will then free you up to completely delete Uncategorized (only the default post category can’t be deleted).

Let me know if that’s clear or if you have any further questions.
