Gateway theme: featured image flaw
-
I noticed a flaw in Gateway theme: when I add a featured image to a page, it overwrites the theme header image, whether or not I choose to display featured images in the theme customizer.
Also, I noticed that upon loading the page, before the header image is shown you see a bright red/pink background area instead, which is a bit annoying, frankly. Why not show a white or gray background?

Hi,
when I add a featured image to a page, it overwrites the theme header image, whether or not I choose to display featured images in the theme customizer.
I was able to duplicate the result you describe, but only on the static front page. It doesn’t work that way on other static pages.
Why not show a white or gray background?
The background color that displays momentarily is the same color that is set at Customize > Colors & Backgrounds > Choose a Palette. The color that displays behind the header image or featured image is the one in the middle of each optional palette.
The “modview” tag added to the sidebar will not call for staff attention. The correct tag to use call for staff is “modlook.”

Thanks musicdoc1.
In my case, the header is overwritten both on the static front page and other pages. Even if display of featured images is turned off in the Customizer.
@Wordpress: any ideas?

Hi folks –
Can you tell me which browser and version number you’re working in when creating the featured image issue on the front page of Gateway theme? Or is it through the app?
-
staff-zinnia,
Hi. I’ve obtained the same results on Firefox 54.0.1 and the Google Chrome 59.0.3071.115. At Customize > Content Options > Featured Images, the box labeled “Display on pages” is unchecked, and yet the featured image displays on the static front page, while the site header image displays on other static pages. See my private test site https://gatewaytest1.wordpress.com/.

I’m also using the latest version of Firefox. On whatever page I select a featured image (which is useful for social media purposes), the header image gets replaced by a strangely zoomed in version of the featured image. (The website I’m talking about is still private, can’t link to it)

Good morning –
Thanks for putting that together, musicdoc1. I’m comparing what you have to baskervillefan’s site to see if this is functioning as intended or not. I’ll be back with an update once I dig a little deeper.
-
baskervillefan – please confirm that you are working on https://baskervillefan.wordpress.com/ ?
There is not a static front page assigned to this site. Please check out the setup instructions for the Gateway theme: https://wordpress.com/theme/gateway

staff-zinnia,
You’re welcome. Not only doesn’t the site https://baskervillefan.wordpress.com/ have a static front page, it doesn’t have the Gateway theme applied either. That’s why I previously asked
Can you provide the address (URL) of the website you’re referring to?

Hi lizkarkoski and musicdoc1,
so I did a little test site: https://gatewaytestweb.wordpress.com/
The header image is sky, the featured images are sea, but they are set NOT to be shown on pages in the Customizer.
However, the featured image does override the header image if the page template is set to ‘home page’, even if the page isn’t defined as the actual homepage (see example of ‘startpage 2’).
This is unfortunate, because with Gateway theme, you have to choose ‘home page ‘ as template if you’d like to have your content centered. If you select the default template, your content is full left on the screen, EVEN if you remove ALL widgets from the sidebar (see example of ‘default page’). Else you have to choose ‘full width’, which is also usually not an option.
So is it possible to adjust the CSS so that the featured image is never displayed (if selected accordingly in the Customizer), even if the page template is ‘home page’?
-
Dear WP, is this issue still under consideration?
In a nutshell, with Gateway theme, the featured image of pages using the ‘home page’ template override the header image of the site, even if the site is customized not to show any featured images on pages.
-
@baskervillefan the theme was designed to use a separate image with the home page template, so that it can have the effect you see on the demo:
https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/ vs
https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/2011/09/20/welcome-to-gateway/Notice they are separate images?
On this theme the header image will always be the same unless you are using the Home Page template, then it will use the featured image.
We aren’t going to modify that functionality because many sites rely on it.
-
@supernovia: I see. It would still be nice if this behavior could be controlled via the checkbox in the Customizer (show/don’t show featured images).
=> on: everything remains as it currently is.
=> off: the theme always shows the header image (but you can configure featured images for social media)Some folks are using the Home Page template for other pages as well, because it’s the only way to get your content to the center of the screen when using Gateway theme.
-
The checkbox in the customizer on Gateway is meant to indicate whether a square featured image will show up on the page or post.
Some folks are using the Home Page template for other pages as well, because it’s the only way to get your content to the center of the screen when using Gateway theme.
Try using the full width template, and then centering your text. Just note that centered paragraphs are somewhat harder to read though (here’s why), so if you’re going to have much text, I’d recommend a default alignment.
-
@supernovia: what do you mean by “square featured image”? I noticed no difference using that checkbox on Gateway.
As explained above, it’s not about centering the paragraphs, but centering the content area as a whole. When using the default template, the content is full left, even if you remove the sidebar widget. The full width template is usually not an option for standard pages/posts (much too wide).
-
alright I see what you mean by “square features image”, it again only affects the default page template. It’s an unfamiliar behavior compared to other themes, but so be it.
Just as a proposal, you might consider adding a page template just like the default one but with the content area centered; or, alternatively, simply center the content area once the sidebar widget is removed from the default page template (as many other themes indeed do).
At any rate, thanks for your help and explications. I now better understand the intentions behind the Gateway theme design.
-
ps: the easiest thing would of course be to simply add an additional checkbox, ‘show/hide featured image on Home Page (template)’.
This is basically what is missing. Then, the behavior of theme would be similar to most other themes.
-
Thank you for the recommendations; I’ll pass them along to our themers. Please note too these things (and many more) can also be controlled with CSS, so if you get a plan that supports it and need help coming up with the code, let us know.
Re: the square featured image, look at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/blog/
And at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/the-beauty-of-analog-photography/On this demo site, the list of posts has featured images showing. Individual posts do not. If individual posts did have featured images turned on, you would see the same square image near the top of the post.
