Gateway Theme – Header Graphic
-
I’ve tried this about 5 ways from Sunday. I set the header theme to the exact pixel dimensions that the theme calls for, it looks fine when in the crop/preview, but when applied, it chops the bottom of the header graphic with the menu. As I understand it, this is supposed to be a flexible theme that allows me to put in pictures (.PNG) much larger than the called for dimensions. Any thoughts?

Hi Jeffrey, if you’d like to display the larger header on your homepage like the Gateway demo displays, there are a couple more steps you’ll need to take – have a look at the setup guide starting from the heading “Homepage Template.”
The header height on your front page currently is the expected height of the header on Gateway’s blog page, as you can see on the demo. Once you set up the front page with the front-page template and get the other elements set up, the header will be taller.
Let me know if you get stuck at any step.

Hi Kathrynwp!
Thanks for the tip, I didn’t realize there were template options such as that. That being said, I did go set the page to a “Homepage Template” and for good measure, re-added the graphic to no avail. Still chops it and doesn’t display it properly. I poked around a bit but didn’t see any other options to change it.
Thanks again!

Hi Jeff – I see that you’ve created a page titled “Welcome” and assigned the Home Page template to it – great!
But it looks like your homepage is still set to display your latest posts, not set to your new welcome page:

Have a look at this guide, it will walk you through assigning a static homepage and a separate blog page:
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kathrynwp,
I’ve looked around and poked here and there after reading the links you provided, I still can’t figure out what would make the header graphic completely visible. I’ve separated out the blog and home page etc. per your suggestion.

The header on the homepage will now expand to fit the content you put in that area, called the “hero area.” For example, the Gateway demo’s hero area includes:
– Site Logo – add via Customizer’s Site Title, Tagline, and Logo panel
– Hero Title – add via Customizer’s Theme Options > Homepage Template panel
– Hero Content – add via Customizer’s Theme Options > Homepage Template panel. You may use HTML in this area, for example to add a call-to-action button, as shown in the demo. -
Can I define the hero area to be larger? The graphic is still cut off, even at the suggested resolution.

Right, the recommended size for the featured image is tall enough to accommodate all the other elements I mentioned earlier. If you’re not adding those elements, the header is shorter.
Since you don’t have custom CSS, a “hacky” workaround could be to add an empty div tag in the Hero Content area, like this:
<div style="margin-bottom: 200px;"></div>Adding empty tags isn’t something I’d generally recommend but it might do the trick.
