Gateway theme: Header image Fixed vs Scroll
-
In the Gateway theme…
Customize -> Theme Options -> General -> Header Image Attachment
…gives a choice of Fixed or Scroll.I don’t see any difference in my header image when I switch between the two settings. What are the effects of the respective settings?

I googled and found this previous thread which suggests that scroll and fixed are effective only on smaller screens.
While in the Customize -> Theme Options -> General -> Header Image Attachment, click on the tablet or mobile icons at the bottom of the customizer. You will then see the Fixed / Scroll options working. They don’t work on large screens.

I’m going to ask our developers to have a look at this as I don’t see the header sticking at any screen size, with the “fixed” option selected. We’ll keep you posted here.

Thanks, staff-happychia and @kathrynwp.
@kathrynwp, I don’t see any scrolling, regardless of the setting, on a desktop browser.
Maybe I have the wrong idea re what “scrolling” means here. Is it where the header image cycles through multiple images, with scrolling arrows at the left and right edges? I also didn’t find a way to select more than a single header image to scroll through.

No, that’s not what the scrolling header refers to in this context – that’s usually referred to as a slider. :)
After having another look and discussing this with our developer, the fixed/scrolling header option in Gateway is working as expected – let me explain a bit more what the differences are.
The scrolling header option means that the header image moves up the screen along with the rest of the page content, when you scroll the page up. If you opt for the fixed header option, the header image remains in place in the background, while the rest of the page scrolls up over it.
I made a little screencast with audio to explain the two options more clearly – let me know if that clarifies it better: https://cloudup.com/cDY-tdbidvO

Yes, thanks. That’s clear.
Aside: I think there needs to be a UX portal of Wikipedia, with a Web Design section that defines the many UI effects; IOW, an open, public glossary. What would be particularly useful would be a reverse glossary that identifies a UI effect/artifact on a page/theme — without such a thing, one must take “scroll” to a thesaurus, go through trial and error with its synonyms and hope to come upon the correct term and still have time to meet the deadline and have a life.

I agree that the wording alone isn’t clear; even I wasn’t sure what the difference was. :) To that end I’ve already put in an enhancement ticket for Gateway so we can make the wording in the Customizer clearer for everyone in the future!
