Gateway Theme Help

Hello! I’ve been on WordPress for about 3 months now. Been playing a lot with themes and customizations and so far, I found the Gateway theme to be the best theme I could use. But I recently discovered that the header image is cropped in different screen sizes. I was hoping that it would just be scaled up or down. So I had to make a header image art that would not be cropped out at any screen size, which was kinda hassle because everytime I uploaded another version of the header, I would zoom in and out of the page just to see if it is cropped or not. Can this possibly be fixed or something?

Also, about the RECENT POSTS widget. I don’t know how to describe it but whenever my post has a long title, it’s written in two lines in the recent posts widget. I wish it was only one line only (like for example the recent posts widget in Twenty Seventeen theme) so it would look clean.

  • Hi there!

The header will always be cropped to match the size of the screen of the viewer so images with text or portraits are not the best choice for that.
To minimize this, you can upload an image with the size recommended by your theme. In Gateway recommended header size is 2560 pixels wide by 640pixels high when the Header Image Display is set to fixed, and 2560 pixels wide by 1000 pixels high when it’s set to scroll.

whenever my post has a long title, it’s written in two lines in the recent posts widget. I wish it was only one line only (like for example the recent posts widget in Twenty Seventeen theme) so it would look clean.

Hm, I don’t think this is something we can help you with but could you share a link to the page where this happens? We’ll have a look.

Hello again! I guess there’s nothing I can do with the header and I humbly accept my fate.

    The site is talesofapoorgirl.wordpress.com

Please look in the sidebar on the titles, “Desperate Times, desperate measures” and also “Advice for a 1st year medical student” which is a reblog. it’s in two lines 😁

  • Hi there,

This is how that theme aligns long text in that widget. There could be a way to fix it with some CSS code. Please note that Custom CSS is a feature included in the Premium and Business plan and therefore you first need to upgrade to either plan before using it. You can read more about it here:

Hello! About the Gateway theme fixed menu. I tried to view my site on landscape mode on my 7″ tablet, but the menu isn’t fixed there. But other blogs with themes like Twenty Seventeen retains the sticky menu even on tablet. Is there a setting that can make my Gateway theme menu sticky even on tablets?

  • Which tablet are you using? Browser type and version number?

Changing a menu configuration is a big deal and it’s going to impact other areas of the site. This is typically beyond the level of css support that we provide.

I want to make sure that there’s not a glitch in the theme though and that I can replicate how you experience it on my end as well.

    I’m using a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 2016 SM-T285 and Google Chrome version 73.0.3683.90

  • Backing up a bit: personally, on any theme that crops the header, if you need an image un-cropped I’d recommend using it as a logo instead. You can even make the logo with a clear background (PNG) and put it over a background image if you’d like. That’s what I’d do in your case.

Regarding sticky menus: many mobile devices will not do sticky anything, and as my colleague mentioned, while layout changes can be done with CSS, it’s not really something we can provide support for, as it gets complex very quickly given all the devices out there. You could hire a developer to help if it’s really important to you. We recommend UpWork.com

But we do want to address any bugs you’re seeing.

I don’t have that specific device here for testing, but I’ve used an emulator and I’m seeing menus in every case so far. Would you be willing to get a screenshot of what you’re seeing, and upload it to your media library? Then update us here.

Thanks for the header image suggestion! I’ll definitely try that some time. :)

With regards to the menu, I was actually fine and happy about how my blog looks on my laptop until last night when I tried to view it on my 7″ tablet, landscape mode and the sticky menu didn’t ‘stick’.

I uploaded some pictures in my media library just now. It includes a blog with the twenty seventeen theme still displaying the fixed menu, and my Gateway-themed blog with the sticky menu not working.

I’m also wondering how it would look like in bigger tablets or iPads but I don’t have any of those devices.

Thanks a lot for all your help!

  • Ah, I see what you mean. What you’re seeing is exactly how Gateway’s menu is supposed to operate.

Not all themes have sticky menus, and this particularly menu cannot be adjusted to stick via CSS alone.

Oh, okay then. I understand. Thank you very much for your help!
