GDPR

I have no idea about being compliant for GDPR. I’m hopeless at anything techie and everything I seem to have read talks about mailing lists, selling, contact forms, analytics etc. I don’t sell, I don’t use mailing lists, I don’t send out newsletters. The only thing that I think collects data is the comment box and Enter your email address to follow Off the Eaten Track and receive notifications of new posts by email. What do I have to do to be compliant? Please make it easy for me to understand as I’m a complete dimwit where techie stuff is concerned.
    Thank you :)

As owner of a small and non-commercial website, I wouldn’t worry to much about that GDPR thing.
You’ll find all the necessary info at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/about-the-gdpr/.
In case you need further help, you could tag this thread with modlook.
As staff-zinnia already stated “We aren’t able to offer any legal advice pertaining to GDPR, that would need to come from private counsel.”

    Thanks, I’ll have a look :)

  • Hi there,

Please let us know if you have any more questions, but the post @staartmees linked to should contain everything you need to know.

    Hi Kokkieh
I guess what I really need to know is what needs to go on my blogs.
I’ve looked at the post that @staartmees gave the link too, but I’m still at a loss.
    You state:
‘For most bloggers and site owners using WordPress.com, comments and feedback are the main way they collect information from visitors. In addition to what is public, there are also a few extra details visible to you in your dashboard, such as the IP address of commenters. When the GDPR goes into effect, people will be able to request a copy of this “personal data” or ask to have it deleted. We are working on ways to help you comply with such requests, which may be in the form of point-and-click tools or written guides.’
    What does that mean?
Do I have to put up a statement? If someone requests to be removed, how do I do that?
Some sites have a checkbox with notify me of follow-ip comments by email and notify me of new posts by email. is this something that I should be doing and if so, how?
Like I said, I’m not techie and haven’t a clue how to do html!
Confused doesn’t even cover what I’m feeling at the moment!

  • Do I have to put up a statement?

We cannot tell you whether you need to do that or not, as that would be providing legal advice. However, we provide you with detailed information we collect about visitors to your site should you want to create such a policy yourself.

If someone requests to be removed, how do I do that?

We will be making tools available that will allow you to do that. Keep an eye on https://privacy.blog, as any updates in this regard will be published there.

Some sites have a checkbox with notify me of follow-ip comments by email and notify me of new posts by email. is this something that I should be doing and if so, how?

Those sites are using the open source WordPress software. On WordPress.com we will not be adding that checkbox at this time, but you’re welcome to add your own notice to the comments box using custom CSS if you feel that is important.
