General editing

    I have produced several WordPress sites in the past and found the editing function very intuitive but now you seems to have made the editing function worse. I have difficulty making a hone page. Also adding pages to a main menu is a mystery. the whole editing function is no longer intuitive. Please help.

    I have produced several pages including what I would like to make the home page. They are all in published and not drafts.

    Hi there,

    For the Boardwalk theme you’re using you can still set a home page for your site in the Customizer under Appearance ->Customize ->Homepage Settings:

    And you can add pages to your custom menu from Appearance ->Customize ->Menus:

    Alternatively, if you delete your custom menu entirely so the theme uses the default menu instead, any new page you publish should be added to that menu automatically.

    Thanks for the advice. I have managed to make a home page and reorder the menu. I have a problem with one page – About Jeremy Reed. When I click on it the page comes up with “nothing found ready to publish etc etc.. when I click on start now it takes me to the home page which I don’t want to edit. I would like to delete it or create a page about me .When I look in the pages menu it is there with a sub heading “your latest post” . If I click on the three dots on right there is no option to delete or trash. Please advise

    The page titled About Jeremy Reed is currently set as your posts page, so it will try to display your latest posts. It’s showing Nothing Found because you don’t have any posts published.

    On the same screen where you set the front page, is an option to set a posts page. Click on that, and set it to nothing (i.e. so no page is selected), and update. Then your page will show the page content instead, and you’ll be able to make changes to it in the editor:

    If you do plan on publishing blog posts as well, you can create a separate page just for that, and set that page as the posts page instead, and it will automatically display any new blog posts you publish.

    I wonder if I am having so many problems because I am trying to edit using an iPad. Some things work whilst other actions which I think would be intuitive don’t work. For example I am trying to resize the photo of me on the About Jeremy Reed page. It doesn’t seem to work on iPad. Should I be doing all editing on a laptop?
    It seems WordPress has changed for the worse. I have produced 3 or 4 blog sites for various adventures I have undertaken but this one is causing me grief.

    I can’t see any way to reduce the size of the photo or crop it etc. if I go to the About Jeremy Reed page and try to edit the photo I can replace it but I can’t see a way to resize it on the page. The photo is too big. I just want a small thumbnail headshot photo of me. If I click on the photo nothing happens. In the past on previous WordPress web sites I created I just had to click on the photo and I could reduce the size and crop etc.

    Thanks for clarifying. On that page I see you added the image in what we call a “Cover Block” which is a special block you can use to add a large (typically full-width) image with text over the top of it. Instead I think you will want to use the more standard “Image Block” which has the sizing and alignment controls that you need.

    This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to switch your existing block to an Image Block and how to resize it and flow text around it if you like that .

    Ok I have managed to edit the photo. I am happy with the site so want to launch it. I am happy with Mygiroditalia.Wordpress.com but when I clip on the skip payment it takes me to the various paid for plans. How can I launch the site just using the free version. I accept the free version will have ads.
