General questions about the Site Redirect service

    Hello,

    I’m planning on self-hosting in the near future, but I’d like to keep my traffic.

    I’m thinking of purchasing the Redirect Service http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/redirect/

    My questions are:
    – Is it really just $13? LOL I’d like to know how much exactly I’ll be charged because my budget is a little tight right now.

    – Is it really as easy as it sounds? Because I have little technical knowledge (I’m new to this whole regular blogging thing) and I’d really like one less thing to worry about LOL

    – Anyone here who can share their experiences with it?

    Thanks in advance! :D

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    $ 13.- / year – should only need it for a year to train the search engines and your old followers

    – Is it really as easy as it sounds?

    Make sure the Permalinks on your WordPress.ORG install match the Permalink structure here.

    Stuff I forgot:

    – So… my understanding is that the old links to my blog that are posted on sites like Facebook/Reddit, once I use the redirect service, when people click on it, they’ll be taken to my new, self-hosted blog, right?

    – will I have to/can I delete the old wordpress.com blog?

    – Will the people who subscribe to my wordpress.com blog still receive email updates?

    – Will the people who Follow my wordpress.com blog still be able to do so once I move?

    Thanks again!

    Correct – that is what site redirect is designed to do

    – will I have to/can I delete the old wordpress.com blog?

    DON’T EVEN THINK OF DELETING THE OLD BLOG – all your options and traffic go away

    – Will the people who subscribe to my wordpress.com blog still receive email updates?

    You can install the JetPack Plugin in your new blog and the staff can transfer your followers

    – Will the people who Follow my wordpress.com blog still be able to do so once I move?

    Yes – not sure with a new name, they might need to update their Reader settings

    @auxclass

    Oh. Thanks for clarifying the whole deleting-the-blog thing. I’ll keep my hands off of it. Ehe. ^_^;;;

    Make sure the Permalinks on your WordPress.ORG install match the Permalink structure here.

    So if the old one is http://tanukidoodles.wordpress.com/2014/02/17/lets-play-the-wolf-among-us/ the new one should be… uhm… http://MYNEWHOSTEDSITEURL.com/2014/02/17/lets-play-the-wolf-among-us/ ?

    ^ like that? (And I’m guessing this falls under a separate export/import issue? LOL)

  • Unknown's avatar

    That looks like the same Permalink – the default Permalink for a WordPress.ORG install is just a funny number –

    Just set the Permalinks on your new blog before you do the export / import and there should not be a problem at all.

    You can also get help at WordPress.ORG with your move and other things to consider. The help forum there is not related to this forum so you will need to open a new account there if you don’t have one, but you can use the same email address if you want

    You be welcome & good luck
