General WordPress.com Migration Issues / Question

    Hello there,

I recently migrated my WordPress.com blog to my new site – http://www.hellofig.org – and installed WordPress. The only reason I did this was because I wanted to install an official Store plug-in to sell my artwork and this fucntion is not available on WordPress.com.

I have successfully migrated all my content – images, text and user comments – but currently have no followers or likes. Having accumulated almost 2500 followers and thousands of likes I’m a little concerned about this. I have installed and activated Jetpack; can an engineer perform the rest of the migration on my behalf?

I also notice some of the Widgets available on WordPress.com are not available in my installation of WordPress on http://www.hellofig.org – “Links” and “Blog Stats”, for example. There also appears to be no “Reader” function, so I can’t view other people’s posts.

Basically, my question is – can EVERY feature / function on WordPress.com – Followers / Following, Likes, Widgets, Reader – be transferred to a self-hosted site that’s installed WordPress?

Thanks very much in advance for your help.

The answer to your question is No.

There is no Reader at WP.org blogs. There is no community, so no Community widget. There are many other things here that WP.org blogs do not have, including Likes.

Hey, thanks for responding. So essentially, WP.org is a hosting platform rather than a social / community platform like .com. Seems weird that the two can’t be amalgamated or that they even exist as separate entities tbh. All I wanted on my WP.com site was a store, but am now paying $14 per month just to have one on a .org site. The bottom line is, my self-hosted site is essentially pointless without followers / community / likes / widgets; the only point to it is the store.

WordPress.ORG is the keeper and developer of the WordPress software. They only do software, they do not host etc.

As long as you have an account here at WordPress.COM you should be able to use the Reader. But yes your Tags and such no longer show up in the Reader. People can use the Reader to subscribe to your blog.

If you install and configure the JetPack Plugin you will get most of the Widgets & Short Code used to build your blog at WordPress.COM will then be available on your WordPress.ORG install.

You could have sold artwork you Personally made here, but no shopping cart, you could have linked to a site such at Etsy from your blog as long as your site was not an e-commerce site.

  • Hi there @bpstainton

I have moved your email and WordPress.com followers. The number was just over 2500.

Regarding parity between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, Jetpack is the correct plugin for that, but even so, there are some things that cannot be replicated, as they exist here on our system.

As it becomes possible to do so, we continue to add features to Jetpack in future releases, so please stay tuned
For any other functionality you are missing, you may be able to find a 3rd party plugin that will offer a similar solution possibly.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    hi jerry,

i’ve agreed with one of your colleagues to leave my followers on WP.com for now, and just use the .org site for the store. If and when all the WP.com features become available on .org, I may move the entire site over. thanks anyway, for yr help.

    all best,

    ben
