Genesis & WordPress Child Theme
-
Newbie here! I am so confused about the child theme. I have one but I don’t know if I’m updating in Genesis or the child theme and I’m afraid I’ll lose everything I’ve posted. In WordPress, it shows that I have two sites. Is one Genesis and the other child theme?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
It’s possible to have multiple sites in a WordPress.com account without creating any child themes. Did you create a child theme as described in the Child Themes support page?
The site https://somanysomedays.wordpress.com/ has the Dara theme applied. What is the address of the site with the Genesis theme applied? And what is the address of the other site that you refer to?
-
Hi there,
Looking into this I see that you have a URL of http://somanysomedays.com in your member profile. Is this the correct URL? If it is I did a lookup on that URL and it appears it is a WordPress.org site. We are a WordPress.com forum and thus will not be able to assist directly. The difference in WordPress.com and WordPress.org can be seen here.
If it is not the correct URL please let us know what URL you are working with :)
For your question though:
In WordPress, it shows that I have two sites. Is one Genesis and the other child theme?
Genesis is the overall theme and the Child theme is an extension of it, where you would add functionality and styling to the site specifically without changing the overall theme. More explanation can be found here. Typically unless you are doing actual styling via CSS or PHP/HTML or function changes you do not mess with the themes directly.
More support for this can be found out the WordPress.org support area:
If you do not have a .org user account one can be created in the link.
Cheers!

Aw man @musicdoc1 I did not refresh fast enough to check for an update. Sorry about that!
-
No worries, it happens. : )
You went further than I did in detecting the likely WordPress.org site referred to. Also, I wasn’t sure if a child theme on a WordPress.com site (requiring the Business Plan and a WordPress.org install) or on a WordPress.org site was referred to in the OP, and was fishing for more information. Together we’ve covered both possibilities, and we’re still fishing.
-
Correction:
Change “the likely WordPress.org site referred to” to “a likely WordPress.org site involved.”
-
-
@musicdoc1 indeed that site does! The OP queried to a Genesis theme / child theme and sounded very confused so I thought to help by explaining what the differences were.
*casts a line out*
@somanysomedays, let us know the URL of the site you are needing help with and we will be very happy to assist however we can :) -
Wow! Great help. It looks like I have a somanysomedays.com and somanysomedays.wordpress.com site. I want to make sure I’m updating and adding to the right place so I don’t lose my settings like I’ve read about newbies doing. Can you advise?
-
Oh, and button theme is retired? Can I change it without losing everything? My host is Siteground, domain from Hover. My gosh, so much to learn.
-
Howdy :)
Great team work here! I love to see that :)
somanysomedays – somanysomedays.wordpress.com is on our service while somanysomedays.com was registered through tucows and is pointed to cloudflare.
Are you trying to use somanysomedays.com on WordPress.com?
I am a little confused and I think that I may be seeing something different than what doc and nixiack8 were seeing on somanysomedays.com. When I take a look at the page source it tells me that this site is using the Emotions Lite theme by Shaped Pixels.
https://www.shapedpixels.com/themes/emotions/
In general, yes you can change your theme without losing the content. It’s always best to run a backup of the site first before you make a big change like that. There are plugins to help you with this type of management and my suggestion would be to use a plan on Jetpack that would store previous versions of your site for you that could be reactivated if an update or change goes awry.

staff-zinnia,
I think that I may be seeing something different than what doc and nixiack8 were seeing on somanysomedays.com.
The theme applied to that site has been changed since I visited it three days ago.
Also, the OP was about the Genesis theme, and (if I understand correctly) a child theme of Genesis, while Genesis wasn’t applied to either site referred to by @somanysomedays (somanysomedays.wordpress.com or somanysomedays.com) when I viewed them.

Hey there @somanysomedays! :)
Thank you for verifying the sites for us :)
It looks like I have a somanysomedays.com and somanysomedays.wordpress.com site. I want to make sure I’m updating and adding to the right place so I don’t lose my settings like I’ve read about newbies doing.
For the WordPress.COM site somanysomedays.wordpress.com here are some quick guide links that can get you on the right path of learning how to work everything out, so that you do not risk losing any settings or other materials:

Using the theme customizer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/You can change out your theme with WordPress.COM in the Themes area, and each theme has a demonstration plus walkthrough guides to show you the differences. More on themes overall for WordPress.COM can be found at this link.
My host is Siteground, domain from Hover.
For the WordPress.ORG site somanysomedays.com it appears Siteground has a WordPress specific tutorial area at this link . You can contact them for further help here. They would be the best to speak about the somanysomedays.com site with as we would not be able to see much since we are the .COM side.
Oh, and button theme is retired? Can I change it without losing everything?
You should be able to – the big thing about changing out a theme is that some items might appear a bit off depending on how the previous theme was set. Reach out to Siteground regarding that and they can clear it up for you.
To cover your domain provider Hover – knowing who your domain provider/registrar for somanysomdays.com is important because when your domain is close to expiring you will get notices about it via email from that provider. Looking up the domain in a WHOIS tool which displays information shows it will expire next September so just be aware of that. Domain registrars host the rights to domains and renew yearly. I found their contact information here in the event you need to reach out to them.
Sorry for the long post, I hope it helps you get started. Happy WordPressing!! :)

One last thing, off of staff-zinnia’s post:

Jetpack is an awesome plugin that can connect across multiple WordPress sites so you can use it on both of your sites. You can learn about Jetpack at this link and if you want to see more on how it works/what it does you can do so here.
If you see yourself using the somanysomedays.wordpress.com more and more and have other questions please feel free to reach out to us here, we will always be happy to assist in any way we can :)
Cheers!

@somanysomedays,@nixiach8,
My host is Siteground, domain from Hover.
The site http://somanysomedays.com/ is hosted by Cloudflare, according to ICANN WHOIS and WhoIsHostingThis, and the registrar is Tucows, Inc. (according to ICANN WHOIS). In her post above, staff-zinnia noted the same host and registrar that I found for that site. Therefore, we still don’t know which site @somanysomedays is referring to, either wrt being hosted by Siteground or the Genesis theme/child theme issue.
-
I am very sorry about this – I should have noted the extra information I went through in looking up various items late last night. I felt if I had added the items below it might have added some confusion which it appears I caused more of :(
It looks as though Hover is a division of Tucows:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hover_(domain_registrar)
so it could show Tucows in a WHOIS as the registrar, and Cloudflare partnered with Siteground for DNS so that is probably why it shows that as the DNS. In any case @somanysomedays if you have questions regarding your WordPress.com site please do not hesitate to ask, if you have further questions regarding the WordPress.org site refer to your site host :)
Cheers!

Good detective work! There’s no question that I’m out of my element in discussing domains, hosts, registrars, DNS, DNS partners and the like. I now respectfully bow out of this topic, for the good of all and sundry. : )
