Geotagging – missing map key error
-
When I’m trying to geotag posts I keep getting a pup up window with the following message
Oops! Something went wrong.
This page didn’t load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details.debugging tells me
‘Google Maps API error: MissingKeyMapError https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/error-messages#missing-key-map-error’
Do I need to add a map key and if so where? Or is this a centralised service on WordPress?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The blog I need help with isn’t my personal site. I can’t seem to edit the original post.
-
Hi @mikerawlins, can you confirm which site you’re having trouble with? We’ll take a look.
-
Hi @supernovia the site I am using this on is https://shrewsburyar.wordpress.com/
Overview of what I’m trying to do:
– I geolocate posts in the WordPress.com site
– I take the feed from the site and pull it in to service that reads the geolocation, post title and content parses it and then creates a feed that I can pull in to layar.com
– layar.com then create the AR environment in the app which we useOur middlewear service sees the feed but ignores it because there are no geotags in it.
-
Thanks @mikerawlins . Can you also confirm whether geolocation works if you edit the posts via https://wordpress.com/posts or whether it’s just happening in wp-admin?
Also, can you provide steps to duplicate the issue?
Here’s what I’ve tried:
– Editing post via worpdress.com/post and adding my current location (works)
– Editing a post via wp-admin and adding a geolocation (works too)
– Specifying a different location (still works)
For what it’s worth, I’m on Mac using the latest version of Chrome.

Hi @supernovia I can edit a location using https://wordpress.com/posts
But…
It only allows me to enter a place or a postcode. Previously I was able to zoom in and refine the location. For example on this post https://shrewsburyar.wordpress.com/2016/08/15/shrewsbury-castle/ when I search for Shrewsbury Castle it doesn’t come up (I know that is a Google issue) but previously I could zoom in grab the marker and place it on the castle. See the screen grab below.
Aside from all of this, when I look at our middle wear which looks for the geotags in the rss feed from the site, it finds none even though they are tagged see this screen grab
We have had this working previously with .com WordPress sites.

Hmm, thanks, I hadn’t ever used that feature where you zoom in and grab the marker, so it’s harder for me to know the expected behavior there, but I’ll see if I can track down some ideas on that.
As for the main issue, do you know exactly when the middlewear stopped finding the geotags, and are the geotags still there on older posts?
-
Hi @supernovia, sorry for the delay in replying, I’ve been away.
Our middle wear is still finding geotags in older content feeds. It is just the RSS feed in this latest one that isn’t showing geotags in it.
-
Thanks @mikerawlins . So all of the posts I see on this site you’ve linked have the same date. Can you confirm this is at https://shrewsburyar.wordpress.com/feed ?
-
-
@mikerawlins so do any of the posts on that site work with your setup? You had mentioned older content feeds, but I only see these few posts all from the same date.
Is there another site I should check?

Hi Mike, I think we’re on the right track.
Can you go ahead and try removing and re-adding the locations via wp-admin?
https://shrewsburyar.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php -
Hi @supernovia
I’ve gone to wp-admin > posts > edit post > and removed the location, when I click the add location button I get an error, see the screen grab.

Thanks. I couldn’t duplicate this in Chrome or FF 49.0. So I tried getting 50.0b8; I still can’t duplicate it there :/ (Also, I am on my older 10.9.5 mac today.)
Can I ask whether you’re able to set location on posts for other sites on our servers?
