Get my theme to show up

I activated one of the standard themes, Independent publisher, on my site, ewritessite.wordpress.com. It doesn’t show up even though it lists it as my theme choice in several areas. Sometimes nothing shows up. Sometimes, a lovely lake picture appears as I’m dinking around. I chose a background which looks good with the lake picture. I decided to go ahead and post my first blog just to see what would happen. There is no theme, but the chosen color is there and the name of the theme at the bottom of the blog. I’ve googled for help but …
I am wondering if the lake picture is a ghost from years ago when I thought I’d start a blog but never did.
