getting a domain
-
I assume when a blog is moved to its own domain that is not attached to wordpress.com the bog becomes basically an island and the tags are semi meaningless for people searching for those tags?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Tags are never “useless” search engines use them to help classify your content. If you move off of WordPress.COM then the tags will not show up in the reader
If you just get a custom domain name and map it to your blog here then the tags will keep working with the Reader – all that changes is the name visitors see.

If you need to know more about what purchasing a domain is about read this article of mine http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/02/do-i-need-a-domain/ If you want to know more about effective and appropriate tagging read this article http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/03/15/quick-blog-post-tagging-tips/ -
The only thing that changes when you buy a custom domain is that the custom domain now goes to your blog. That’s IT.
