Getting a domain name?

I have a couple of questions I need to ask an experienced WordPress user!
Firstly, I’m wanting to get a private domain name but I’m in the UK and the cost per year is displayed in US dollars – when I pay for the private domain name am I going to be charged extra or anything in the process of the currency being converted? Or would they charge me £18 instead of $18 (which of course works out more expensive).
Also is it possible to cancel a domain name years down the line or do I pay yearly forever?! Say I stop blogging in 2 years time and don’t want/need the domain name anymore? Or does it automatically expire and you have to make sure you renew it each year?

WordPress.com is an American company so prices are in US funds and you can use a currency converter if you need to – use Google to find one.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name your desire must be available for purchase.
If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Just stop paying the yearly renewal and everything goes away – if you use the Auto Renew function you just turn it off and ignore the emails you should receive asking you to renew the domain registration & domain mapping – then there is a switch to flip to clear the expired domain name to make sure the expired domain is no longer mapped to your blog
The down side is that search engines will have indexed the custom domain name along with your friends and the custom domain name links will be broken
