getting a domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to pay for the domain name that is in my cart actually LOL …tearsoftruth.com but I wanted to ask a question before I do something I might regret. I want to make sure that people who have been reading my site for a long time and the people who have my old URL of : suzydukettes.wordpress.com (people who get it from the news magazine I write for. They publish my blog site address and they’ve used this one forever)…but if I get this new URL of ‘tearsoftruth.com’ will people still be able to go to the original URL of suzydukettes.wordpress.com so both will work? I’m also so afraid of losing everything I’ve written for so many years. I don’t want anything to happen to it? Can you answer my questions? Thank you so much

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.

You can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.

Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

I have a TBI and have a very hard time reading all of these words …Im so sorry I had a 4.0 graduated with honors from University. Im not dumb and I love to write…but I just need to know if I purchase the domain I want and I purchase the privacy part, will my blog be lost or affected in any way? I don’t want to lose my already existing blog. I also want people to be able to still find it from the original WordPress given name , along with. my new name that I am wanting to purchase. I just need to be sure I won’t lose anything. Im nervous

    Hi suzydukettes,

but if I get this new URL of ‘tearsoftruth.com’ will people still be able to go to the original URL of suzydukettes.wordpress.com so both will work?

Absolutely! Adding a custom domain to your site will not delete your existing blog address — suzydukettes.wordpress.com. It will forward to your new domain tearsoftruth.com.

People will be able to get to your site using either tearsoftruth.com or suzydukettes.wordpress.com, but they will see tearsoftruth.com in browser’s address bar.

I’m also so afraid of losing everything I’ve written for so many years. I don’t want anything to happen to it?

Adding a custom domain to your site won’t change the content you have written. Think of it like changing the name of your house — you can put a new sign on wall but the house is still in the same place :)

I hope that answers your questions but let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

Thank you! So very much! Do you suggest tearsoftruth.com or tearsoftruth.blog? I feel like most ppl are more familiar with .com? Do you think that’s ok? Thank you for your help! So I can just purchase what’s in my cart “a domain name” and it will add that to my Suzydukettes.wordpress.com?
Thank you! So much you helped a lot because too many words & I just cannot weed through lol!!youre so kind and helpful

    Hi Suzanne,

No problem, I’m glad I could help! :)

Do you suggest tearsoftruth.com or tearsoftruth.blog? I feel like most ppl are more familiar with .com?

I think either would work well. Long term, if you want to use the domain for something other than blogging then tearsoftruth.com might be better. But tearsoftruth.blog is a bit more unique and memorable.

So I can just purchase what’s in my cart “a domain name” and it will add that to my Suzydukettes.wordpress.com?

Yes, make sure you have gone to My Sites and selected suzydukettes.wordpress.com. Then you will need to choose a plan (custom domains are a feature of paid plans):

    https://wordpress.com/plans/

The Personal plan is the cheapest option if you are upgrading in order to register a domain.

After you’ve purchased it, let me know and I can show you how to set it as the primary domain for your site — this will display the domain in your browser’s address bar instead of suzydukettes.wordpress.com.

Hi Gemma I just have one more question do you think that it would be better for me to just use: “tears of truth.com” or is it better for me to hyphenate it like this : “tears-of-truth.com”
I feel like the first one is easy for people to find if they’re looking it up by name? But you can see each specific word a little better with the-in there? Sorry I just need a little advice I’ve never done this before thank you. Suzanne

    Hi Suzanne,

I just have one more question do you think that it would be better for me to just use: “tears of truth.com” or is it better for me to hyphenate it like this : “tears-of-truth.com”

A domain without dashes will be shorter and easier to type. Also, if you are talking about your blog and someone asks where they can find it, the domain without dashes will be easier to say. I personally prefer them without dashes because they are a little shorter but ultimately the decision comes down to personal preference.

Don’t worry about asking questions, I’m happy to help!
