getting a "parked" domain name back
-
Hi,
I used to have this domain name : http://www.alanig.fr
I have cancelled my subscription and I’m not using wordpress any more.
I would like to get this domain name back to use it for my new wix website. I’d like it to now be hosted by 1&1.
How can I make this happen?

As mentioned during the cancellation process, there is no guarantee that you’ll ever be able to re-register your domain.
The cancellation process usually mirrors the domain expiration process, which is largely outside of our control: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/
The good news is, this is one of those rare instances where we can recover the domain, but we’ll need you to pay the $18 registration fee again.
So, you have two options:
1. The domain will fully expire June 15, 2020, at which point it enters the expiration process linked to earlier. At the end of that process, you’ll be able to attempt to re-register the domain elsewhere, but we still can’t guarantee you’ll be able to do that.
2. We can send you a payment request for the $18 registration fee and recover the domain for you. 60 days after that (also a limit outside of our control), you can transfer the domain to another registrar https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/ but until then you can direct the domain elsewhere simply by changing its name servers: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/
Please let us know how you’d like to proceed!

I’m going to opt for number 2 but I have a question. During the 2 months before I can transfer the domain name, can I make it still make it point to my wix website? Will that be an issue during the transfer?
Thanks for the quick answer ! -
Yes, you can use these instructions here to do that:
Please confirm that you would still like to go with option #2 above and we can get that started for you.

Hi there,
I sent you the manual payment. Please let me know when you have paid for the upgrade and I will go ahead and restore your domain.
Thanks!

Where will I be able to manage it from? Is it going to appear in “my websites” on wordpress?
-
-
Hi there,
You’ll be able to manage it from your WordPress.com account, My Sites -> Domains:
-
Ok so I just wait for it to appear in my domain list then.
Thank you for the quick answer. -

Hi there,
Thanks for your payment. I’ve restored the domain to your account, and you’ll see it again at My Site ->Manage ->Domains.
The 60 day transfer lock only applies to new domains. As you originally registered this domain quite some time ago, it is not subject to any transfer lock, so if you wish to transfer it you should be able to do so immediately:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
You can also leave it registered here and just point it to another provider, as mentioned above.
I also notice we accidentally charged you for the cost of a .com domain, rather than a .fr – .com costs $18, but .fr only $15, so I’ve refunded the difference.

Ok, great! Thanks a lot.
So I can just leave it with you and point away from wordpress. How long will the 15 dollars take me, a year? -
How long will the 15 dollars take me, a year?
Correct!
So I can just leave it with you and point away from wordpress.
That’s totally up to you, as mentioned above, your domain is not locked, and can be transferred immediately if you so wish. Or, you could opt to manage from WordPress.com and have it mapped to your host.

OK I thought I was out of the woods but no…
I followed the instructions and changed the dns names to point to wix. I connected my wix site to my wp domain… and it doesn’t work. I still have the wp site that used to use the domain and I don’t know how to get rid of it without loosing the domain. The domain still takes you to the wp website if I use the wp site as main domain, and if I use alanig.fr as main domain, then it leads to nothing.
I really don’t understand enough of how domains work to understand what in the world I should do… :'( -
Ok nevermind. After a thorough cleaning of internet cache, cookies and disk files, it works fine. :)

Thanks for coming back to let us know that you’re all sorted. Keep in mind any DNS change could take up to 72 hours to become fully activated.
