Getting a website over to wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! I’m taking over as webmaster at my little community based radio station in regional australia and I’d really like to move it across to wordpress as I’m familiar (and prefer) to curate a website with wordpress rather than google sites- i don’t want to re-learn how to do the things I already know here. The domain name has been purchased through google sites already. I’m a little lost as I’m not super savvy with the backend of things.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

    Hi There,

If you already have a domain you own, you can do either of the following:-

    1. Transfer an existing domain (the one you already own) to WordPress.com – transfer the domain to WordPress.com completely if you prefer to manage everything in one place. That transfer is free with any of the annual plans. As part of the transfer process, your domain will be renewed for an additional year.

To know more about transferring domains, check out the link below:
    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

    2. Map an existing domain (the one you already own) to your WordPress.com blog – if you already have a domain that you registered and purchased elsewhere, but want to keep managing it via your current provider (note, you’ll still need to pay them for the renewal each year.)

To know more about domain mapping, check out the link below:

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi there,

Can you give a link to the current site? I’m guessing you’ll want to move over your content as well, but the “how” of that will depend on how the current site is created, specifically, whether it’s using a CMS, like WordPress, or whether it’s hard-coded HTML.

Meanwhile, you can see our detailed guide for migrating a site to WordPress.com here:
