Getting back the dashboard menu

  • Unknown's avatar

i’m new to this today. I have a draft website, which I have published. but when I come back in to Dashboard, and select customise (or edit) my site, the side bar menu is ‘Front Page Header Designs’ and there is no way to go back up the menu to Dashboard, without closing the whole thing down. I cannot move forward at all now. Help!

    Hi there!

Could you provide us the URL of the site you need help with?

    Cheers

BTW thank you – and yes, I sent the message out twice as it seemed the first had not been sent.

Sorry but it looks like ukrbbp.org.uk is not a registered domain, are you sure is the right one?

That is the one I set up but I can’t access it via that name /wp-admin. There was a message earlier today saying setting up the site would be complete later. I log into wordpress via bluehost.

I could post a copy of the screen if I could send it somewhere

If you purchased a domain with Bluehost, probably you are using the self-hosted version of WordPress (or WordPress.org). Just to make things a little bit clearer:

WordPress comes in two flavors: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

With WordPress.org, you use the self-hosted, open source version of the WordPress software, it means you host your own blog. It also means you can freely upload and install themes and plugins, edit the code behind your site, have access to your site’s database, etc. But it also means more responsibility (you have to take care of backups, security, etc.).

With WordPress.com instead, you don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server. WordPress.com takes care of all of the hostings, security, backup. etc. On the other hand, with a free plan, you can’t upload any custom themes, plugins or modify the code behind your blog. Some of this options are available with an Upgraded Plan.

For more info about the difference between the two you can check this support guide:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If you need help with a WordPress.org site you will usually find better support here:

    https://wordpress.org/support/

You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:

    https://wordpress.org/support/register.php

Be sure to provide a link to your site when you post so people can help you more easily.

If your site is connected to Jetpack, for Jetpack support you can contact them here:

    Contact Support

In general, you can find all the documentation for WordPress.org (lessons, troubleshooting, etc.) here:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

If you can’t get in via cPanel or FTP, you can contact Bluehost tech support here:

    https://helpchat.bluehost.com/

    or here:

    https://www.bluehost.com/contact

If instead you are somehow experiencing an issue with transferring or mapping your domain here to WordPress.com and need a Staff follow-up, you can add a modlook tag to this thread (right sidebar).

i’m sorry but I don’t see how this helps me. I signed up and paid with bluehost and have access to WordPress through that. I can’t tell if it’s WordPress.org or .com. It was going fine, I was setting up my site, adding links, pictures, text. The dashboard was sitting on the left hand side. Now I have dashboard including the option to customise my site but when I select that, I lose the dashboard and get the menu with Front Page Header designs, with no option to go back or switch – only an X at the top left which closes things down. you go round in circles.
I have to sign off now and am away until next Thursday; I was hoping to have got further with this today, in prep for being away, but that’s not going to happen. so let’s close this down and I will try bluehost or wordpress help next week. Thank you for trying to help.

If you were using Bluehost to access your site and your hosting provider is Bluehost, it means you are using WordPress.org. Please refer to the links I posted above for further help. Good luck!
