  i want links to my categories on my blog and cannot figure it out

  Hi there. What exactly do you want to do?

  To have your categories display in your sidebar you need to add the categories widget: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/

  To have links to your category archives in your blog menu, you’ll need to set up a custom menu and add category pages. More information here:
