Getting Death Threats in the comments

  • Unknown's avatar

I am moderating for a friend who is away. I only have “Edit” permission. We are getting inundated with hate speech spam, but I can’t find out how I can block a user or an IP. The site is OurFiniteWorld.com. The user to be blocked is “Quitollis” (obvious, if you look at the comments).

Please help. We are getting death threats from this user.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Report them to the police.

I will also flag this for staff attention, so they can blacklist that commenter.

    Thank you, raincoaster.

The offending IP (86.146.31.55) is British Telecom, I’m in Canada, and WordPress is in San Francisco. Who the heck should I report it to?

Your local police or maybe also the RCMP (not sure what the Canada FBI is) – most police departments have cyber units of some sort – and a death threat is a death threat

Report it to the local police. They can contact their corresponding department in the location where the comments originate. It might also be a VPN, ie a spoofed IP. Police have the tools to determine this.

This is good news, actually. The British are on a tear, going after abusive internet trolls.

The real Quintollis offered this information:

“The psychopathic threats from 86.146.31.55. should be reported to the FBI.”

Unfortunately, that IP address comes from British Telecom:

    Hello there,

I also want to make certain that you’re using all the WordPress.com tools at your disposal to keep the commenter from publishing anything on your site.

Here is a list of ways you can protect yourself:
    en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/

Please set up all those tools, and let me know if it helps prevent this commenter from appearing on your site.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Thanks, Robyn.

As I mentioned, I am “guest moderating” and have only “Edit” access.

I see the blog owner is here. We’ll see how we can coordinate comment policing better.

    Jan,

If you need me to help out the blog owner, I can. Just let me know how you decide to handle things.

    Thank you!
