Getting into wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am new to wordpress. I am a web designer and so I code from scratch. My question is: “If I want to code and customize the templates; remove side bar, footer, META and add a static home page. Do I need to upgrade to be able to do all of these things? Or can I do all of this in the free wordpress sign up?

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

do not confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org software.

WordPress.com allows you to focus on your beautiful content without worrying about technical stuff. If you are a web designer wanting to get your hands dirty, and host your website yourself, go for WordPress.org.

    Here is a comparison:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Here is a link to WordPress.org website:

    Hi,

Thanks for responding. I have a client actually that has a wordpress blog. She wants me to turn it into a website, so she has given me this chance to finally dip into wordpress. She is not technical so I am trying to stick to the basics and reorder things, making her blog no longer a blog into a website.

If you are talking about WordPress.com hosted blog, a good starting point to learn how to create a homepage is to see this tutorial:

    https://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/

However, you won’t be able to customize the templates, remove sidebar, footer etc.

For that, you need a self-hosted WordPress.org install.
